John Dave Malkovich was an exceptional man known for his undying commitment to his family and his exceptional work ethic.
Born September 12, 1920 to Mary and Daniel Malkovich, immigrants of Yugoslavia, his family moved back when he was nine months of age. After living there for two years, the family moved back to Tonopah, Nevada where he lived with his sisters, Laura and Katie. At the age of eight, his family relocated to Roseville where began learning the family grocery business and his youngest sister, Natalie, was born. Extension Grocery was named after a mine in Tonopah and located in historic downtown Roseville. After his father died in 1949, he took over the family business. Although he was attending Sacramento City College, he was drafted into the army where he dutifully served for three years. Because of his exceptional work ethic in the army, he was nominated to attend Officer's Candidate School. Because of his undying dedication to his family, he declined and instead returned home to manage the family grocery business. Extension Grocery had evolved into M&K market, named after the two managing families, Malkovich and Knezevich. His marriage to Judith Hammond brought about his only son John Dave Malkovich II in 1956. After fourteen years of marriage they divorced. The grocery business was sold after large scale retailers entered the market, making it difficult to compete. John then began working for Safeway, where he worked for 28 years. Here he met Vernie Rogers whom he married in 1963. They enjoyed 48 years of marriage full of friends, golfing and weekend vacations. He passed away peacefully on January 2, 2012 after 91 phenomenal years of life.
He is survived by his wife, Vernie; sister, Natalie; son, John; nieces, nephews and family. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
Graveside services will be held Friday January 13, 2012 12 p.m. at Roseville District Cemetery 421 Berry Street Roseville, Calif.
