Brian Sweet Obituary

Brian James Sweet

AUBURN - Brian James Sweet, 56, of Auburn, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, November 13, 2024. He was born in Auburn, the son of the late Gary F. Sweet and Karen E. (Merritt) Smart. Brian was a 1986 graduate of Auburn High School and went on to receive an Associate's Degree from Cayuga Community College. He spent the last 25 years as a dedicated employee of Skaneateles Country Club.

Brian loved his dogs. He centered his life around his beloved Brody and Bella. Brian was a huge fan of the Grateful Dead, seeing many shows starting with October 20, 1984. So many wonderful friendships were cultivated following the Dead around the country. Brian was a horse racing enthusiast, and many thought he was a great handicapper. He loved March Madness and some might remember it as "Flounge Maddness" as he jokingly named his bracket pool. Brian was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan with the 2004 world series win being one of his happiest moments Alabama Crimson Tide was his college football team. If he was writing this, he'd say Roll Tide!! Most of all he loved his friends and family. He especially adored his nieces and nephew who lovingly referred to him as "Funcle Brian".

He is survived by his wife, Lynne (VanDuyne) Sweet; his brother, Chris (Jennifer) Sweet; a sister, Amy Hastings; a stepfather, Fred Smart; a stepmother, Kathy Sweet; a nephew, Collin Sweet; four nieces: Abagaile Sweet, Gabrielle, Emma and Rylee Hastings; and close friends: Kevin and Claire Wallace and Tom Moskul. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Gary Sweet.

Friends are invited to visit the family on Monday, November 18, from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., at Langham Funeral Home, LLC with funeral services to follow at 1:15 p.m. Burial will be in Butler Savannah Cemetery. I was away for a couple of weeks and just recently was informed of Brian's passing. I can't adequately express how saddened I was to hear of his death. I admired Brian very much and enjoyed being there at OTB and sharing racing info with him. He was a whole lot better at it than I was. To say he was a great handicapper is putting it mildly. The guy knew his stuff. And, as a fellow (albeit somewhat older) GD fan, I enjoyed sharing info with Brian about them. May he Rest In Peace. I, as many, will miss him very much.
