AUBURN | Carl Joseph Yoensky, 76, devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at his home on May 21, 2014, surrounded by his loving family as was his wish. He was born to the late Charles J. and Florence (Gardner) Yoensky in Auburn, where he was a lifelong resident.
After attending Auburn-area schools, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served from 1955 through 1959, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He completed basic training at Parris Island, S.C., and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
Without the benefit of completing high school, Carl became a successful and well-respected businessman. He started his career building custom homes, working with his father in the family business, Charles Yoensky and Son. Carl was known for his craftsmanship and attention to detail. Throughout this stage of his career, he built more than 70 quality custom homes in the Auburn area, including his own. Carl firmly believed in supporting local businesses, utilizing Auburn-based subcontractors and suppliers. He was an active member of the National Home Builders Association. In the late 1970's, Carl saw an opportunity to use his skills and knowledge to take his business in a new direction, renovating and renewing distressed properties including several apartment complexes and commercial spaces in the Auburn area. In so doing, he created quality dwellings for hundreds of individuals and families, as well as numerous individually-tailored commercial spaces for businesses. A lifelong learner, Carl taught himself many skills and held several certifications including Licensed Electrician, Master Plumber, and Licensed Real Estate Agent. He readily shared his skills and knowledge, mentoring and advising others. Carl developed a reputation as honest, hard-working, and dependable. Community organizations sought him out for his knowledge, experience, and ability to "get things done." He played leadership roles in the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse and the Auburn Downtown Business Improvement District. Working with these organizations satisfied Carl's desire to give back to the community. Carl was a loyal friend to many, a trusted advisor, and was always willing to lend others a hand. He was known for his sense of humor and friendly nature.
While his work was his primary passion, Carl also enjoyed gardening, travel and spending time with his family and friends.
Surviving to cherish his memory is wife, Tammy; daughter, Sheila; son, Edward (Patti); grandson, Jacob; sister, Jean; brother, Bill, and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Carl was predeceased by first wife, Barbara in 2004.
