Edsger Dijkstra Obituary

AUSTIN (AP) - Edsger Wybe Dijkstra, a University of Texas professor who was considered a pioneer of computer science died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 72.

Dijkstra was renowned for his work in software development and computer programming, including his early insight that mathematical logic is the basis for programming.

He was also well known for his work regarding the building of computer operating systems and other areas in the field, including his shortest path algorithm.

Born in the Netherlands in 1930, Dijkstra graduated from the Gymnasium Erasmianum in Rotterdam and earned degrees in mathematics and theoretical physics from the University of Leyden and a doctorate in computing science from the University of Amsterdam.

He worked as a programmer at the Mathematisch Centrum in Amsterdam from 1952 to 1962, was professor of mathematics at Eindhoven University of Technology from 1962 to 1984, and was the Burroughs Corp. research fellow from 1973 to 1984.

Dijkstra retired as professor emeritus from UT in 1999.
