AUBURN | George E. Simmons, 86, of Shortcut Road, Cato, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Auburn Community Hospital.
Born in Patten, Pa., George spent most of his youth in Tupper Lake, N.Y. George was in the United States Army, having served in occupied Japan. He later moved to Central New York where he was employed as a lineman for Rochester Gas and Electric Company for two decades.
Following which, George started, owned and operated the Parker's Pond Gun Shop. His skills as a gunsmith gave him notoriety not only in Central New York but over a multi-state area. His unique and extremely precise craftsmanship became one of his trademarks; the other of which being George's ever present and infectious smile. He was a member of the NRA and the Labuff Cole American Legion in Cato.
George is survived by one son, Harry; one daughter, Suzane "Sue" Fadden and her husband, Thomas, of Cato; a brother, William and his wife, Helen, of Skaneateles; a sister, Marie Hudgins and her husband, Frank, of Marcellus; as well as four grandchildren, Daniel Fadden, Lisa (Dale) Nelson, and Shannon and Robert Simmons; as well as several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Carbone following 31 years of marriage.
Friends are invited to join the family for a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at noon Saturday, April 26, 2014 in St. Mary's Church. Entombment with full military honors will be in St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours for George will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Friday in the Cheche Funeral Home Inc., 1778 Clark St. Road, Auburn.
The name George Simmons will not only stand for the best in gun work, but more over for his courteous and kind manner of which he dealt with all who had the honor of being associated with him.
