Gino Alberici
Aug. 17, 1936 - Oct. 2, 2023
AUBURN - Gino Alberici, 87, passed away at home on October 2, 2023, with his wife, Maxine of 61 years by his side. Gino was born on August 17, 1936, in Auburn and grew up on Wood Street.
Gino was the son of Gino and Giaconda (Leoni) Alberici who were born in 1894 and immigrated from Italy. He would play a number of sports and had the most success in football where he was named an All American his senior year. Coach Bob Dean was an incredible influence on his life and would push him to pursue football at the next level after he graduated from West High School Class of 1954.
Gino went on to play football at St. Francis Prep and then Holy Cross, where he received his B.S in Education.
Out of college, Gino embarked on a 34-year career at Port Byron Central School District as a Social Studies teacher and coach. He again had great success on the football field, but his greatest joy came with the thousands of incredible people from the community that touched his life.
Gino would meet Maxine (Randall) at Port Byron and they would marry and have six children: James (Kristy), Joanne Lippert (Steve), John (Wendy), Joe (Petra), Jeff (Megan), and Jason (Leigh); 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Gino was active in the community being a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church, serving on the Town of Owasco Board, the Board of Education for Auburn and chairing the United Way Campaign twice. These are just a few ways that he gave back to his community.
Gino enjoyed gardening and cooking, but few things brought him the joy he found with his family and friends. He reveled in the success of his children and grandchildren and wanted everyone to know how proud he was of each of them. Gino always said, "Family is everything!"
Gino was predeceased by his parents and his four siblings: Anne (Sam) Fede, Renee (Henry) Zarbo, Leslie (Virginia) and Bruno.
His family wants to thank the many people who visited, said a prayer, sent a card or helped in his care as he physically deteriorated. The care he received the end of his life was truly incredible.
Calling hours are this Sunday, October 8, 2023 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 90 Melrose Rd., Auburn, NY 13021. Gino's Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, October 9, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph's Mausoleum.
Gino's final wish was that a scholarship be set up at both Port Byron and Auburn High Schools in his name.
In lieu of flowers, please make a gift to The Gino Alberici Memorial Scholarship and specify Port Byron or Auburn in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to 7 Melrose Parkway, Auburn, NY 13021.

Dear Max ~
What a guy your Gino was!
From the time we met as duplex renters at 16 & 16 1/2 Hoffman St. the four of us became like family. Here we are, 60 years later, and still staying in touch (all the way from Charlotte, NC) and sharing laughs. We are so grateful to have been with you and Gino just before he went to Heaven ... the angels clearly were on our sides.
We know we'll all see little touches of Gino in our lives forever and we also know that Heaven now has a winning football team.
Sending tremendous sympathy and love,
Marilynn and Bob

I was so sad and sorry that I heard about Coach Alberici's passing Sunday evening while attending a Celebration Of Life for my aunt's partner. It was during a discussion about the Port Byron and Weedsport sport teams rivalries. I was shocked and made sure I checked the Citizen Obituaries this morning about 9 am. I wish I had known earlier about his funeral service. He was a great man and coach. I was fortunate to be a soph on his first PB football coaching team as well as the next 2 years. I/we also had him as our basketball coach. He was a wonderful coach, mentor and impacted my HS life along with Coach Alberti from the important sports perspective. I was able to use many things learned from them in my many years coaching at Eisenhower College, Hobart and William Smith Colleges as well as for Mynderse Academy. Crossing paths with Coach Alberici and Mrs Coach at Wegmans in Auburn was always a wonderful occurrence. I hope she has a continued good life until they meet again.

Dear Maxine and Family: Gino left a legacy like no other. He was "The Faithful Gardner" to all. The title, from the book of Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PHD . This writing from the back cover of her book "What is this faithful process of spirit and seed that touches empty ground and makes it rich again: Its greater workings I cannot claim to understand, I only know that in its care, what has seemed dead is dead no long, what has seemed lost, is no longer lost, that which some have claimed impossible, is made clearly possible, and what ground is fallow is only resting...resting and waiting for the blessed seed to arrive on the wind with all...Godspeed. And it will..."
Gino was the 'seed' and from his planting, a kind, loving, giving human evolved. Grazie, Thank You...

As a Weedsport student I grew up not liking Gino. As the coach of our archrivals he brought a lot of heartache to our school.
As an adult, I see the positive impact he had, not only in the Port Byron community, but ironically in Weedsport as well. The students he taught and coached, have grown into outstanding people, who continue to positively impact Port Byron, Weedsport and the the Central New York area.
I´ve worked with Gino´s son John professionally. I have great respect for him. Today, my niece Nina, is fortunate to have another of Gino’s sons, Jeff as her coach...so once again, Gino continues to impact my life.
What an unbelievable legacy he left. He will live on in the hearts and minds of so many. May God grant him eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon him.
With Great Respect and Sympathy,
Theresa Leonardi and Family

Maxine and family,
So sad to have heard of Gino´s passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Gino when he worked with us during his summer breaks. They say we were put on earth to make a mark in life. Well, Gino certainly fulfilled that obligation. I will miss our conversations along with his advice and genuine concern for myself and my family after John´s passing. May he rest in peace and life´s memories comfort you through this difficult time. May I add how much he loved to pick up your boys in the red survey Jeep with Yogi bear painted on the side. He would share their excitement when they saw him drive up.

It deeply saddened me to learn of Gino's passing earlier this week - which was respectfully shared by a former local football player whose family members also competed against his teams.
When I first became acquainted with Gino in 1977, he was recognized as "the Dean of Onondaga South League football coaches". His teams were very well coached and motivated, and to beat a Port Byron football team then was rare and took a supreme collective effort.
Since moving from Weedsport in 1979, I can recall a few occasions when Gino and I met up again - most recently at the new PB game field dedication in his name and at the celebration he invited me to that followed. Gino was always gracious and welcoming to me which was respected & much appreciated. He was blessed with a long successful and loving life.
May God's strength and fond memories be with the Alberici family and his many friends & loved ones during this time of loss and grief.
Rest in Peace, Coach.
With sincere sympathy,
Donella
