Joel Converse Obituary

AUBURN --- Joel E. Converse, age 5,8 of Auburn, formerly of Clifton Springs, died Thursday April 5, 2012 at SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in Pioneer Cemetery. Joel was born the son of Harland J. and Mary L. Converse. J He was in the 1972 Midlakes graduating class. As a young boy, Joel enjoyed reading Tol Kien's books and short stories, swimming in the family pond, badminton, and playing and composing musical pieces. Once he tried the guitar, a permanent attachment resulted and he spent his life favoring it. In his post high school days, Joel's work included a winery, Mobil Chemical and musical presentation such as "Hotz and the Invisible Men". In the late '70s he had the honor of performing with David Amram, composer-in-residence for the New York Philharmonic. Joel taught rock, jazz, and improv at Speno Music in Auburn. Last fall he formed a rock quartet that was successful. Getting ill in December Joel had to stop all working. Joel was always a Philadelphia Eagles fan. He was so happy to find out that the doctor, Dr. O.P. Wilson of Phelps, was on the Eagles charter team in 1933. Joel is survived by his daughter, Cassandra C. Coraci; and granddaughter, Bianca Coraci, of Auburn; mother, Mary L. Converse, of Clifton Springs; aunt, Ruth Pierce, of Clifton Springs; many cousins and countless friends who enjoyed his gentleness, tolerance, soft spoken humor, fairness and talents. Joel is predeceased by his father, Harland J. Converse; and brother, Daniel Converse. Hotz always took time to say hello to me and exchange a kind word or "story of the day". As a young guitarist myself and later a guitar teacher, Hotz was a big inspiration to me. He was dedicated to perfecting each part of a song or lick, but yet added a smoothness that you felt. Hotz truly felt the music. I will remember him for this and will miss him dearly. My thought and prayers to Cassie and family during this difficult time.

I did not know Hotz extremely well, but as an early adult I took a few guitar lessons from him. He changed the way I thought about guitar and I've been forever thankful. I always appreciated his candor and I'm very sad for his passing. We were in touch over the years via the internet's various social media and we always made each other aware of our musical endeavors. He was a good dude as well as an amazing guitar player.

I was very shocked to hear of Hotz's passing. I used to hang out with him when I was 12 years of age and he was in a smokin' jazz group with Dan, David Chitambar, and my brother Tom on bass. The group was called "Four Brothers" and it was a musical education for me just hanging out. I was fortunate to tag along with those guys and Hotz was great. I even played drums with him when I was a kid. He was always warm and friendly and smiling. I am very sorry for your loss.

Hotz has been my bass teacher for 2 and a half years and he taught me everything I knew. He even took me from being an awful musician into a pretty decent one. Over this time he became my musical hero and I wish I could of studied under such an amazing musician for at least abit longer. I know he will be remembered for ages to come and I know I could never forget him. Our hearts are full of sadness for your family and friends of Hotz. My son took bass & guitar lessons during this last year with Hotz and we looked forward to our Wed sessions. I enjoyed listening to both David and Hotz jamming on the other side of the door and I looked forward to our post conversation which was often about his daughter and grandaughter and stories abt his mother and her teaching years in school. I see his wonderful smile, hear his laugh, and of course, his music. I appreciate all the stories Hotz told and the memories we made while he was instructing my son. Joel, you will never be forgotten..Thank you for all the memories! xoxo
