Mary Moffa Obituary
Mary Jean Cosentino Moffa
February 6, 1936 - October 21, 2025
Mary Jean Cosentino Moffa, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, at her home in Naples, Fla., with her devoted husband, John, by her side. She was 89.
Born on February 6, 1936, and raised in Auburn, N.Y., Mary graduated from West High and Albany State Teachers College. She began her career as a librarian and English teacher before taking on the greatest challenge of all: bringing six children into the world. Luckily, Mary was never known to turn down a challenge. Together with John, she built a vibrant life that spanned continents: from their roots in Auburn to years abroad in Singapore, later returning to Singapore when she and John were empty-nesters before moving to Shanghai and eventually settling in Southwest Florida, where they spent the past twenty-five years.
A passionate and accomplished golfer, Mary won the Ladies Club Championships at Dutch Hollow Country Club in Auburn, Hudson Country Club in Ohio, and Shadow Wood Country Club, in Estero Florida. Her rare feats on the course included a hole-in-one and a double eagle, and she loved reminding her family that not even the pros could top that.
Mary Jean's sharp intellect and infectious humor made her a cherished presence at bridge table and book clubs alike. A natural storyteller with a flair for embellishment, she often quipped that it was better to tell a good story than a boring one.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rose (Daloia) Cosentino; her brother, Sam Cosentino; and her son, Richard Allen Moffa. She is survived by her husband, John; her brother, Richard Cosentino; daughter, Lynn Dee Moffa; sons, Gerry (Linda), Steve (Sandra), Frank (Jean Marie), and Jeff (Lisa); fourteen grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial mass will be held on November 15, 2025, at St. Francis Church, 299 Clark Street in Auburn, N.Y. - where Mary and John were married 66 years ago. Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by mass at 11 a.m., with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Her warmth, laughter, and generous heart will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
