Nicholas Speno Obituary

AUBURN - After a courageous battle with cancer, Nicholas (Nick) P. Speno, Jr., 72, left this earth on the wings of angels to travel to his permanent home on Friday, June 25, 2010. Nick was a lifelong resident of Auburn. During Nick's short time on this earth he was a devout member of Saint Hyacinth Parish since 1957. Nick was an intricate member of the Parish Finance Committee and devoted his time to the Saint Hyacinth's Annual Parish Picnic. Nick was a true family man and leaves behind many happy memories he shared with his wife of 53 years, Bobbie Ann; his son, Mike Speno and his wife, Sue; his daughter, Janet Speno-Bodner and her husband, Steve; his sisters, Ellen and Margaret Speno; his grandchildren, Mike Gauthier, Michele Whipple and her husband, Chris, Stephanie Speno, Matthew Gauthier and his partner, Jenna DeLapp, Nicky Speno, and Mary Bodner; his step-grandchildren, Jimmy and Greg DeChick, Sara DeChick Casper and her husband, Tim; great-grandchildren, Jordan Whipple, Connor Gauthier, Angel Gauthier, Gavin Gauthier; his brother-in-law, Stanley (Butchie) Casbarro and his wife, Joanne; his niece, Terri Casbarro; his nephew, Jimmy Casbarro and his wife, Tina; great-niece and nephew, Jimmy and Jamie Casbarro; and his beloved family dog Buddy. Nick also shared extraordinary memories with his dear cousin, Eddie Speno, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Nick had many stories and tales of the times he shared with his golfing, church, work and military friends. Nick was an extremely devoted member of the United States Armed Forces. He served for 43 wonderful years in the United States Air Force Reserves beginning in May of 1955. Nick began his military career in the 108th Tactical Control Squadron/Tactical Control Flight Heavy. Nick transferred to the 152nd Tactical Group and completed his active service to the country by achieving the prestigious rank of senior master sergeant. Upon retirement from the United States Air Force, Nick devoted his military time to the New York State Guard serving as a member of the Joint Staff and achieving the rank of major. Nick's professional career was two-fold. He worked as a logistical engineer with more than 30 years of employment with General Electric/ Lockheed Martin. During his career with General Electric/ Lockheed Martin, Nick was employed in Saudi Arabia for a period of 19 months installing radar towers throughout the region during the Desert Storm War. Nick also had a rewarding and fulfilling career with his family owned business, Speno Music, Inc. Nick started working beside his father at the age of 9. Eventually after retiring from General Electric/ Lockheed Martin, Nick spent the remainder of his professional career working beside his son Mike at Speno Music, Inc. where he created and managed the eBay business for the store. Nick was very involved with the community of Auburn and served on several community organizations. One of Nick's greatest joys in life was marching in the annual Auburn Memorial Day parade wearing the Air Force uniform he was so proud to display. Nick was instrumental in planning and implementing many of the Air Force flyovers that took place during the Memorial Day parades in Auburn and surrounding communities. Nick enjoyed spending time with his family, playing golf, fishing, bowling, NASCAR, casino trips and watching his beloved New York Yankees. Nick was predeceased by his parents, Nicholas and Agnes (Hooper) Speno; his sister, Ellen Speno and his great-grandchild, Angel Gauthier. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 30 in Saint Hyacinth Church with military honors being presented at St. Joseph Cemetery immediately following the church service. My deepest sympathies to the entire Speno family. Nick was truly one-of-a-kind. He'll be sorely missed. One thing I will always carry with me from my brief time in Nick's life, is his capacity to believe in people. I loved that about him.

Bobbi Ann and Family, I am sorry to read of Nick's passing. I don't believe he made anything but friends during his life, and he certainly did contribute to mankind in the process. I pray that his soul now rests in the Heaven we all believe in and pray for and that our Holy Father joined his soul with those he loved and who went before him. He will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Bobbie Ann,
I can't begin to express how saddened we were to read of Nick's passing.
After experiencing the death of our son
we found the most comfort and understanding in a message sent to us by our former Pastor Fr. David, it still soothes our spirit as time has passed and we want to share it with you in hopes it helps at this time and the near future;
"GOD SAW HIM GETTING TIRED, A CURE NOT MEANT TO BE, SO HE PUT HIS ARM AROUND HIM AND WHISPERED "NICK COME HOME WITH ME." Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. With love, Mike & Bobbie Kukiela

Without a doubt, a true gentleman and a true friend. I knew Nick from the the old 108/113/152 military days. Nick was committed to whatever job he was assigned to. Even when he assigned as a Safety Officer (and who likes Safety Officers?) he did that job with class. He was always looking for ways to help you as he had the respect of all his peers and superiors. Yes, Nick had a great sense of humor always laughing at situations and laughing at himself. Nick will be sorely missed. To all of Nick's family, please accept my deepest condolences. Nick is finally at peace.

To The Speno Family from The Nash Family,

We are all saddened upon hearing about the passing of Nick. He was a GREAT man and a fun person. Nick always asked me of how things were going and had a smile on his face and some kind of a life story to share with you, whether it was about golf, his miltary service or his years of employment. Nick will be GREATLY missed but fondly remembered.

Dear family,

We will certainly miss Nick's friendly face and helpful hand at the store. He was always willing to assist the young musicians with a guitar or other request. Just a couple of weeks ago during Founders Day he graciously bought lunch for the kids from Jim VanArsdale's guitar school after they jammed out in front of the store. We will always remember his kindness.

Sincerely,

To Mike and family

Your Dad was one of a kind.
He always tried to do his best by everyone he met.
He always had a kind word of encouragement and always was ready to work a deal to help people get what they wanted.
I am sad to think that he is gone.
Mike you like your Dad have always been the same way and I hope and pray his memory will live on through the things you say and do.
So sorry for your loss. It was everyone's loss.

Roberta & Family

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I cannot come up with enough good words to say about Nick. When I first met Nick I just got back from Tech School and we were on our way to Oklahoma to bowl in a Air Guard Tournament. When I joined the 108th in 1977, he introduced me to people like Terry Matro,Howie Yeomans, Joe Bonn, Luke Thayer, Frank Fioromonti etc etc. We became good friends. I remember when we would play golf together at Dutch Hollow and the Auburn CC. We had some good times together, times I will always remember. I even remember when my wife's son told me he had bought his first drum set and accessories from Nick. And if he needed anything I would stop at the store and buy from Nick. I wish I had the chance to come back to Seneca Falls and Syracuse more often and visit, but living in the South made it tough. I will miss Nick very much.

Dear Bobbie, Margaret and family:

Please know how sad we are and how much I will miss visiting with Nick at the store when we come into town. He was such a special person. I still remember him and his trumpet playing above us when he lived in the apartment on Underwood St. I hope he finds Uncle Louie and plays some for him. They will both have a laugh. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was really sorry to hear about Nick's passing. Just 2 weeks ago we talked about flinging 78 RPM records like Frisbees into the Owasco Outlet when I was 10 and he was 12. His Dad worked for Paul Rowe at Rowe Music back then. We used to go up to the second floor and sail them off the back porch.

Years ago I bought Rowe Music, and later on Nick's Dad bought if from me. It has been Speno Music ever since. I didn't see Nick Jr. all that much, but enjoyed staying in touch with him. I know the entire city of Auburn will miss him. I will too.

Nick was one of the first to welcome me to the 108th. He was a great mentor and wonderful friend. When I think of him I remember his lovely sense of humor and the way he laughed at his own jokes. He was always one to look at the glass 1/2 full and lend solutions rather than criticize. He was such a great patriot and loyal friend. My thanks to his family for sharing him with us. He will be missed. Very sincerely, Brenda (Apples) McIntosh-Clark
