Rene "Shorty" Marie Mentillo

March 26, 1962 - Feb. 5, 2024

ANAHUAC, TX - Rene "Shorty" Marie Mentillo, 61, of Anahuac, TX, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 5, 2024, in Anahuac. She was born on March 26, 1962, in Auburn, NY, to the late Anthony and Marie (Colella) Mentillo.

She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and boundless energy. Rene graduated from Auburn High School in Auburn, NY, with the Class of 1980 and went on to pursue higher education, earning her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from SUNY Cortland and her Master's in Education from the University of Houston.

Throughout her career, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds, spending over three decades as an educator in both the Houston Independent School District and Alief Independent School District, until her official retirement in 2019.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Rene was a vibrant soul with diverse interests. She was passionate about animals and sports, particularly rooting for her favorite teams, the NY Giants, Houston Astros and Oregon Ducks.

An avid traveler, she found joy in exploring new destinations. Although not known for her culinary skills, she had a talent for creativity and crafting.

Rene's love for the outdoors was unparalleled. Whether fishing, running marathons, or riding motorcycles, she embraced every opportunity for adventure. Her infectious laugh and big heart endeared her to all who knew her, and she approached life with unwavering enthusiasm and compassion.

Rene was preceded in death by her parents; and former revered partner, Karen Hogden-Vasek. Remaining to cherish her memory is her beloved wife, Kelly Wetzel Mentillo; son, Austin Oxendine and fiance, Jazz; her brother, Peter Mentillo and wife, Sally; niece, Kristie Dandeneau and husband, Brian; nephew, Nicholas Mentillo and wife, Kirby; her great-nieces and nephew: Brilee, Bryce, and Bradie Dandeneau; Chase, her treasured cat; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Rene's wish to be cremated will be honored, and a memorial service celebrating her vibrant spirit and cherished memories will be held at a later date.

She will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all whose lives she touched.
