Sydney Marsden Obituary

Sydney Bruce Marsden

Sydney Bruce Marsden, 66, of Auburn passed away Saturday, January 31, 2026, at NYU Langone Health in New York City after having a heart attack. He was born in Auburn, NY, the son of the late George and Shirley (Murfin) Marsden. Syd grew up as an active member of the Auburn community working in the family business at Crosman's Jewelry store, singing in the choir at school, and earning his Eagle Scout award.

Syd went on to serve in the Coast Guard being stationed in Gloucester, Alex's Bay, Governor's Island, and on the USCGC Dallas for over 20 years. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1998. He then spent the next 26 years working as a heating service technician for Shotmeyer Brothers in NJ, and most recently by E&V in Auburn, NY. Syd was well known for his love of all things related to engines and motors especially model trains and antique boats. He has been instrumental in revitalizing the local model train club and helped to start the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS) 's Finger Lakes Chapter where he has served as a Director and Judge for many years. Above everything, Syd cherished and loved time spent with his friends and family, especially giving rides in his boat.

He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kathy (Keuerleber) Marsden; and two daughters, Kim Marsden (fiancé Matt Matarese), and Katelyn Marsden. As well as his siblings, Wendy (Rick) Fetridge, Karen Marsden, Charlie (Janet) Marsden, Sue Blackman, in addition to several nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law.

Calling hours are this Friday, February 6th from 4 pm to 6 pm in the Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn, NY. Funeral services are Saturday at 11 am in First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.

Instead of flowers, please kindly consider a donation to Syd's memory to the Cayuga Valley Model Railroader Club, Cayuga Valley Model Railroaders, 245 Genesee St. Auburn, NY 13021, or the Finger Lakes ACBS chapter, FLC chapter of ACBS P.O. Box 1022 Skaneateles, NY 13152.

So shocked and saddened to learn of Syd's passing. We met in 6th grade and were in the same class throughout grades 6-8 at East Middle. A few years ago, we had a nice visit when Syd came in for the boat show and was getting ready for a move back to Auburn. He will be missed at our upcoming HS reunion next year. I hope happy memories comfort your family during this difficult time.

My deepest condolences to your family. Syd and I were classmates and friends beginning in 6th grade. We both chose the Coast Guard after school and I know he was successful as Chief Machinery Technician. I remember his love of the Corvair. He was a pleasure to know and to listen to. God Bless him and your family.
