Gary Bald Obituary

Funeral services for Gary D. Bald, 71, were conducted by Pastor Gordon Buchholz on Saturday morning, May 14, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The casket bearers were Brian Bald, Rick Bald, Darin Bald, Anthony Bald, Chad Heuss, Jason Fett, Kevin Burns, Tim Walters, Jim Lewis, Nick Kauffman, and Matt Madsen.
Gary Dean Bald, the son of Harry and Gladys (Jensen) Bald, was born Jan. 12, 1945, in Audubon, and died May 10, 2016, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, at the age of 71 years, 3 months, and 28 days.
Gary was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He attended the Audubon Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1963. While in school, Gary worked at the bowling alley setting pins and worked for the City of Audubon in the sanitation department and at the water works. Gary moved to Des Moines, where he attended the American Institute of Business. He returned to Audubon and was employed as a police officer for the City of Audubon.
On June 25, 1965, he was united in marriage to Joanne Winther at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Audubon. Three children Daniel, Angela, and Jeffrey were born to this union. In 1967 Gary started farming with his father-in-law Alfred Winther. They grew row crops and raised livestock for many years. After Alfred retired Gary continued to farm on his own for years developing now into more of a supervisory role where he made daily trips with his dogs to watch all the activities.
Gary was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Audubon. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and growing sweet corn. Gary liked to play cards and enjoyed his new hobby of collecting coins. Gary and Joanne enjoyed traveling around the United States and Hawaii. He also found peace spending time at Winther's Pond and the family cabin in Lake View.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers and sisters Mary Ann and husband Leroy Peterson, Elaine Bald, Darrell and wife Gail Bald, Delores Walters, and Merlin Bald; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Alfred and Marie Winther and his sister-in-law Janice Swesey.
Survivors include his wife Joanne Bald of Audubon: his children Daniel Bald and Angela Nielsen both of Audubon, and Jeffrey and wife Diane Bald of Sioux City; his grandchildren Derek Bald and Nicole Bald both of Audubon, Stephanie and husband Justin Adam of Seattle, Wash., Melissa Nielsen of Sheboygan Falls, Wisc., Shelby Nielsen and fiancé Pheonix Briggs both of Ames, William Bald and Chloe Bald both of Sioux City; his great-grandchildren Jane Adam of Seattle, Wash. and Gabriel Jacobsen and Azaleah Jacobsen both of Sheboygan Falls, Wisc.; his brothers and sisters Alvie and wife Sandra Bald and Dallas and wife Doris Bald all of Audubon, Judy and husband Jack Burns of Glidden, Karen and husband Wayne Heuss and Connie and husband Marcel Fett all of Audubon; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Joyce Bald of Kansas City Mo., Gary Walters, Mary Kay and husband Marlin Lewis and Linda and husband Charles Kauffman all of Audubon, and Deanna Kauffman of Estherville; his faithful companions Pete and Licker; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
