Larry Lee Nielsen

Funeral services for Larry L. Nielsen, 73, were conducted by Pastor Ron Mortensen on Monday, Jan. 3, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon. The honorary casket bearers were his grandsons Austin Nielsen, Zachary Nielsen, Balin Weatherhead, and Preston Weatherhead. The casket bearers were Bill McGuire, Dean Bauer, Curtis Nielsen, Craig Nielsen, Jeff Nielsen, and John Roberts. The Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon was in charge of the arrangements.
Larry Lee Nielsen, the son of Wilmer and Elvina Kuntzweiler Nielsen, was born Aug. 12, 1937, at his Grandmother Kuntzweiler's home in Audubon, and died Dec. 28, 2010, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, at the age of 73 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
Larry was baptized as an adult at the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon in 1982. He attended several rural schools in the Audubon County area in and around Viola then attended Audubon High School. Larry moved to California and was employed at the Lockheed Air Base for two years. He returned to Audubon and worked at a gas station for a short time then was a farm hand for several years. Larry then worked for Robert's Feed and Seed.
On Feb. 22, 1968 he was united in marriage to Barbara Cerka at the Ross Evangelical Methodist Church in Ross. Larry continued to work for Robert's Feed and Seed for many years, and then erected grain bins for Wheeler's in Exira. He then decided to go on his own and developed Nielsen Construction. He erected grain bins and did general construction, farm and household repair. Larry operated his business until he retired in 2004 due to health issues. He enjoyed his home then moved to the Exira Care Center in December of 2010.
Larry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Audubon. He was an avid bowler and appeared on the Let's Go Bowling TV program several times. He enjoyed spending time with his children and entertaining the neighborhood children. He liked to travel and going to Branson, Mo. He enjoyed playing cards, was an avid Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed watching sports and other programs on the television. His pride and joy were his four grandsons.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Don Nielsen; a niece Kristine Nielsen and his wife's parents Ora and Ida Cerka.
Larry is survived by his wife Barb Nielsen of Audubon; his children Lori and husband Jeff Weatherhead of Little Elm, Texas, Angie Nielsen and John Mickelson of Keokuk; and Mike Nielsen of Audubon; his grandsons Austin Nielsen and Zachary Nielsen both of Emmetsburg; Balin Weatherhead and Preston Weatherhead both of Little Elm; his brothers and sisters Bill and wife Claudine Nielsen of Apache Junction, Ariz., Rich and wife Jesse Nielsen of Verdel, Neb., Jim and wife Diane Nielsen of Kimballton, Diana and husband Don Cowman of Ormond Beach, Fla., Dennis Nielsen of Carroll, Sherry and husband Wendell Amendt of Spencer, Terry and wife Marilyn Nielsen of Urbandale, and Dale and wife Pam Nielsen of Pleasant Hill; his brother-in-law Don Cerka of Atlantic, Iowa; his sister-in-law Deloris Correlli of Denver, Colo., nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
