Dear Family of Mrs. Bernice J. Tillman:
My siblings and I were deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your Loved One. We remember Mrs. Tillman fondly from our English/ Literature and Language Arts days at T. W. Josey High School. We were also Lucky Street neighbors. She always stressed the importance of standing straight and speaking clearly. When we think of pronunciation and enunciation, we think of Mrs. Bernice Tillman. We are so very sorry for your loss.

One of the best teacher at Thomas Walter Josey Comprehensive High School. My deepest sympathy. Ms. Tillman taught me Greek Mythology in 1983 and she was a gemm. To God be the glory for her life and how she touch so many of us.
Take your rest with the Lord.

Ms Bernice Jackson Tillman was an icon of learning and grace. Her teaching was always done with a love for her craft that was evident in her every word and movement. One could see snd feel that she cared about what she was pouring into our young minds. Ms Tillman gave more to me than I can put into words. She was always willing to give more of herself than was asked. When I had trouble with an assignment, or a problem that was more personal than scholarly, she was as free with her wisdom as a human being could be. Never shy about her ideals and morals, she was insistant that we become more than little machines crammed with facts but no knowledge. She taught us to see life as it could be, as well as life as it was. I was her student at A R Johnson, and at T W Josey, and can say truthfully that it was because of her love of learning that I aquired a thirst for learning that has never dissipated. There is an empty place in the world of education that can never be filled now. They just don't make them like her anymore. God may have called her home to her rest, but the light that she shed on the world will never dim as long as one of us remains who remembers that she touched our lives in such a special way. She was a Great educator, and a Great friend to us all. We learned to love the language, and we learned to love her for what she brought to us with her passion and professionalism. God blessed us for a time with her presence, and she will live on in our hearts and minds forever. My sympathy goes out to the family at this most trying time, and I know that
god will treat her gently in her new home. Walter Jones, Class of 1966.

We really can't put into words how much we love and will miss our dear aunt Bejee.A new soul has entered heaven and there a great celebration will take place welcoming the new resident with jubilation. There we're sure she will still spread her joy of laughter and knowledge.
She was there as we grew up, she was there when we all went to high school at Josey and taught us. She was there when we went to college and when we became adults. It's hard to comprehend that she's gone but we do have our memories.
May God wrap his around your family during this time of sorrow. You have our sympathy and love.

Ms. Tillman, I will miss you. I will never forget your warmth and kindness shown towards me, my mom (JCJ) and sister (Candace). As a child growing up, I remember you always treated us to Red Lobster on "pay day" ;-). You also rewarded me whenever I did well in school. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and influencing me to strive for the very best in life. Rest in Peace.

My thoughts and prayers to the family of Miss Tillman. She was an excellent educator at T. W. Josey. At first, a little intimidating, because you knew if you took her class nothing but the best was expected. However, once you were in there you were captivated by her voice and her love of literature. She loved to hear Zach Rumph quote one of her favorite poems, because he knew how to persuade her to be a little lenient on the class of '83. "She walks in beauty like the night." This would make her smile & he often quoted this poem to her everyday. Keep walking into those golden gates Miss Tillman and show them how a "real" English teacher does it. God bless.

As the tally of years, since my days as a student at A.R. Johnson and T.W. Josey increase; I'm able to identify with increasing precision, those "special" people who impacted my life in the most positive ways. Special people have a way of subtly giving you a gift whose true value is not realized until it has weathered the test of time.
Ms Bernice Tillman was a special person and a consummate educator who prepared me for a future that was beyond my comprehension at the time. She gave me a gift, so long ago, that has been key to my success as a professional; and for that, I will be eternally grateful. I am certain that these sentiments are shared by all my fellow classmates. We were all inspired by her teaching abilities, caring attitude, and indomitable personality.
Ms Bernice Tillman, Thank You. You will always be cherished and remembered, and may God continue to bless you and grant you eternal peace.

My love of books came from my mother, but my love of words came from Miss Tillman. She taught with more enthusiasm and passion than I had ever seen in an educator. Miss Tillman once looked at me and said firmly but with a smile, "I expect you to do quite well in my class." I imagine she said that to every one of her students. She expected manners, diligence and hard work and for girls to have respect for themselves. She is often a reference point as I talk with my middle schooler about his education, and that, I suppose, is the mark of an excellent educator: to impart to students important lessons they can depend on for a lifetime. I am always grateful for the love of learning she encouraged. May she rest peacefully in the hands of Our Lord.

Miss Tillman was a wonderful teacher who saw potential in everyone. She cared about the person you were as much as about your education. She always had positive things to say to lift you up, and she never minded speaking her mind when you were messing up. She will be greatly missed. My prayers are with the family, and all who grieve her loss.

Ms. B. J Tillman was "simply the best." Her love for her craft was exemplified in her teachings daily. I often think about some of the literary works that she recited during class. They meant nothing to me at the time but later in life I grew to love Literature just as she did. She would also constantly tell us girls that we should never give boys our most precious gift, our bodies. I now share that piece of knowledge with young ladies that I mentor. To the family, I offer my sympathy and a prayer of encouragement. Its never easy losing a loved one but please remember that God is in control. To, Ms. Tillman, I offer a "thank you" for so many lessons that you didnt realize you were teaching. Thanks for sharing your knowlege as well as your strength. There are days when I can still hear your voice teaching and lecturing us. Rest in peace, B.J Tillman! You will never be forgotten. Thanks for your impact on the lives of Josey Eagles.
