Several months ago after returning to the U.S., I sent a note of gratitude to Governor Sanders for his encouragement of my international career. He was always very kind, and I admired him. With deepest sympathy and prayerful thoughts to Betty and family as well as his loyal executive assistant at Troutman Sanders, Doris Barnes.

my sincere condolences. one of the best times my mother had was a cruise aboard the Queen Mary from England back to New York. Carl and Betty were on the same ship and they spent a lot of quality time together reminiscing about Augusta. my father grew up with Governor Sanders and even ran against him for office. Carl jr. and i were friends and i'll always remember the day at Athens Y-Camp when a Georgia State Patrol car pulled up. it was quite intimidating but then the back window rolled down, and my name was called. it was Carl jr, coming to camp from Atlanta. i got in the patol car and we turned on the siren, lights, etc. it was a blast! what a full life Governor Sanders lived.

I owe my career to Gov. Sanders. In 1964 he had the state merit system requirements changed to accommodate my wish to become a state trooper. I served at the mansion for a short time driving Mrs. Sanders. and in time went on to fly with the state air transportation. Thank you Governor for putting me where I am today. I will always be grateful and considered you my friend. You will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Sanders and Family,
I considered Governor Sanders to be my friend and mentor and was saddened to learn of his passing. He was an outstanding model for our state since the 50s, excelling and demonstrating his natural leadership qualities by leading Georgia to the highest levels in government organization and quality education. I admired his many accomplishments and during his tenure as Georgia's governor he made us all proud to be Georgians. His legacies and examples will serve our state and its people for many generations to come. We pray the Lord will continuue to bless his wife and family and hold you in his loving arms until you are reunited in the Lord's eternal home together.

A caring gentleman and strong leader that will truly be missed. He always had a smile and good word for any occasion! I was only able to experience a few years around him at work and cherished every moment.

With many thoughts and memories of a past and not so distant past, I extend my prayer of condolence to the family and his political friends. I shall always remember him for his example, efforts and availability to me as a student, educator, Americus/Sumter Countian, civil rights veteran.
His kind will be and is sorely missed today.

Gov. Sanders was my Aunt Margaret Wood's favorite students at old Monte Sano school. I had the honor of meeting Gov.Sanders after a speech at Augusta College that I was covering for a local radio station many years ago. I still have the small class school bell that he and his mother gave to her. She kept it on her desk until she retired after 45 years in the Ga. school system.Carl Sanders was one of Georgia finest Governors my Aunt Margaret was always very proud that she had the honor of being one of his teachers.

As the last living former state trooper who had the honor of serving Gov. Sanders, his wife and children I am deeply saddened and extend to Ms. Sanders, Betty Foy and Carl Jr. my heartfelt sympathy. I was with him and his family in Augusta when JFK was killed. He truly was the spokesman of the new south. Colleges back then that were known as Gainesville Jr. College, etc., under his leadership were built. He now belongs to the ages and shall be deeply missed. He treated all of his troopers assigned to him as family. It was my honor to call him a dear friend. Cecil A. Callaway

Betty, Carl Jr., and Family: So sorry to hear of Carl's passing. Just last year, we talked on the phone about Augusta area projects in which he helped come about, as well as salt water fishing (he said you did better than he!) I also was privileged to receive a book about his life and career signed by himself. Please accept my sincere condolences. Bill Baab, Outdoor Editor (retired), The Augusta Chronicle

It was one of the blessings along my own life journey to know and have worked with Carl Sanders at Troutman Sanders for many years; and, as a native Atlantan, to have watched his political career and journey as well. I will always cherish the memories of the kindnesses, professionalism and attributes of a true Southern Gentleman he always exemplified. May his legacy of progressive, fair, just and sincere leadership be the infinite light for us all. My sincere sympathy and prayers are with Betty and all the Sanders Family. God Bless you all in this time of loss. ... June Owens ...

I was honored to know the very distinguished Governor while working at both Fuqua Industries and Healthdyne (later Matria Healthcare), while he served on their Board of Directors. He was a true southern gentleman and always the best dressed in the room. My condolences to his loving family. RIP.
