Dear Gail, For the past several years I've been trying to contact David (my cousin). Yesterday I had the bright idea to try Facebook. I'm not Social Media savvy and was surprised when his name popped up. Then, of course, shocked to learn of his death.
David's father and mine (George Mascaro) were brothers. I was close with his mom and spent many hours with her at their home in Mount Vernon. She was a wise and sweet woman and a great mentor to me.
The last time I saw David was when my mother (Mary Doyle Mascaro) died in 1990. He stayed with my husband (Ken) and me in Mount Vernon. It was great to reconnect with him and talk about everything from sports to Buddhism and so much more. He was always so charming and a bright star in our family. Whenever his family visited (when they were living away from Mount Vernon) everyone was delighted to gather to see them. The girl cousins were especially happy to flock around David.
There is one story to share...when I was about 20 years old I was in the bank and saw that they were displaying a portrait of the pope that David had painted. I didn't know it was going to be there and exclaimed, "Oh that's my cousin!" The patron in front of me asked, "Is the pope your cousin?" I replied, "No, but the artist is." :)
Gail, although we never met I feel I know you just a little bit. When David visited in 1990 he spoke so highly and warmly about you. He was a very lucky man to have such a love. I hope that time has helped fill the void of loss and that the memories of your life together are sweet and comforting. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.
With deepest sympathy, Your Cousin Maureen Mascaro-Brodkey
And to my cousins in the Mascaro Clan, I'd so much like to hear from you.

Because of Dave's insistent pestering that I take a Daniel Green workshop, a whole new world opened up for me. I left a solid career as a medical illustrator to become a fine artist specializing in portraits. I have never looked back, but this would have never happened if Dave hadn't repeatedly called me several years after is initial suggestion following up on whether or not I'd taken the workshop. Now that's a committed teacher! I'm forever grateful. Perri

David was one of my favorite professors and my mentor while in school at MCG. He was such a great teacher and always willing to give me encouragement and inspiration. One of the best memories I have of my days at MCG were evenings in the studio when David would make his informal rounds and stop off in my cubical and say hey, Kari, I got a new joke for your dad! It was those evenings when his teaching skills were most appreciated, since he gave me a one-to-one lesson. He had such a unique way of balancing that fine line between teacher and friend.
Even if my airbrush and watercolors have been exchanged with Photoshop and a Wacom pen, my color medical illustrations are still inspired by the "Mascaro color" pallet.

David was one of my first college art professors... His skill level, humor, discipline, achievements, and knowledge encouraged and inspired me... He helped me to learn to see the world in a brighter way. He had an ease of making you want to try harder and be your best but at the same time to remember to enjoy things more along the way. He is def. one of the reasons I went into teaching art. I will always look up to him. Thank you for everything David. You will be missed by many.

My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Mascaro. Mr. Mascaro was the kindest man. He brought a smile to our office every time he walked in. I enjoyed our conversations during his visits. Sometime I would say hello to his bestfriend, he brought him to most visits. He would wait patiently in the car for him to come out. Mr. Mascaro was always so positive through it all. We will miss him. God has gained an angel.
