Elizabeth Kingsland Obituary

MYSTIC, Conn. - Elizabeth Claire Kingsland, 31, of Mystic, died on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017. She was the beloved daughter of Stephen and Barbara Kingsland of Mystic.

Born on April 30, 1986, in New London, she grew up and attended schools in Mystic. Beth had a beautiful singing voice and was a longtime member of the Chorus of Westerly from the age of 7. She especially enjoyed attending the Chorus' Camp Ogontz in the White Mountains of New Hampshire every summer; it was her favorite place in the world.

She studied at UCONN, graduating with a bachelor's degree in linguistics. After college, she joined the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Petty Officer First Class, and was most recently assigned to Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. She worked for the NSA, serving as a linguist and cryptographer, and was qualified in 15 languages including numerous Arabic dialects and several European languages. She qualified as Expert in rifle and pistol shooting and trained fellow service members in the use of firearms and firearm safety.

Beth was a dual citizen of the United States and of Australia. Her joy in living, love of nature, her creativity, beauty, keen intellect, and wicked sense of humor endeared her to all.

Beth is survived by her parents and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Carrie.

A Service of Celebration of Life takes place on Friday, Aug. 11, 1 pm, at Mystic Congregational Church, 43 East Main St., Mystic. Burial with full military honors follows at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Chorus of Westerly, 119 High St., Westerly, RI 02891; the Mystic & Noank Library, 40 Library St., Mystic, CT 06355; or the donor's charity of choice.

I was so saddened to read of Beth's passing. She was a talented, amazing force of nature who really seemed to love life, & by choosing the Navy path gave to herself the self-discipline she knew would be the key to her success in life! Her smile says it all. I am so sorry for your loss.

I did not know Elizabeth Kingsland but I do know this. If she joined the Navy then she loved not just her family and friends but her countrymen as well. She was willing to watch over us - people she would never meet, people she owed no debt to - so that we could sleep well at night. For that, we are grateful.

Barbara and Steve,

Words cannot begin to express my sorrow for Beth's tragic passing. I am truly sorry for your loss. I had the honor and privilege of working with your daughter during the past two years and she was truly one in a million. She positively affected many people's lives, none more so than mine. Her laugh and smile always made my day. I hope that this outpouring of love for her from her friends goes someways in helping you in this time. I'll just leave it with this, a lyric from one of my favorite songs:

"Lord make me a rainbow, I'll shine down on my mother
She'll know I'm safe with you when
She stands under my colors."

I can't believe this has happened. You were a light who broke through the darkness. You made a difference, Claire. I loved your wicked humor, your vivacious personality, and am honored to call you friend. You made more of an impact in your short years, than many do their entire lives. You will always be in my heart, never forgotten. May you be at peace. I will remember your laugh always. Until we meet again, my friend.

I am so truly sorry for your loss. I hope that one day the sorrow weighing heavy on your hearts might be replaced by the joy she brought to all who met her. Beth was my dear friend and mentor. I worked side by side with her for the last three years and admired her greatly professionally and personally. She was a part of my Navy family and I will miss her always. My deepest condolences to your family. May she know peace.

Tom and I are devastated to learn of Beth's accident. We cannot begin to understand the depth of your loss. We know of your love and pride in the life and accomplishments of your amazing daughter; we know that Beth was the product of your love and care and of the unique gifts you cultivated in her.

We are so heartbroken. We loved having Beth as a part of our family, even though it was just for a few years. She was loved and a joy to be with. Barbara and Steve,
We are so sorry to hear this news. I remember with great fondness the stories you told me regarding Beth. How gifted and determined she was. How once she made a decision she stuck with it like swimming in the Mystic River or joining the Navy. How proud you were of her. You are both wonderful parents. We will be praying for you.

I knew and worked with Elizabeth while stationed in Augusta and working in the same building she did. I knew her personally and professionally. As a person she was truly pure gold and I believe intellectually brilliant. I am so sorry for your loss and the pain you are all enduring. I want to express my most sincere condolences for your loss and pray God will heal your hearts with the sudden passing of your daughter and sister. God bless.
