George Herring Obituary

U.S. Marine Corp Retired EVANS, Ga. - Colonel George William Herring, USMC retired , died at the age of 85, on January 24, 2003, at the Brandon Wilde , a Retirement Home in Evans, Georgia. He was the son of the late Henry Henderson Herring and the late Margaret Burdette Herring, of Rockmart, Georgia. Colonel Herring graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940. Among his duty stations during WW II , he served as a company commander with the First Marine Raider Battalion on Guadalcanal. During the Korean War, as the Commanding Officer of HMR-161, he pioneered U.S. military helicopter tactics, as chronicled in the book, Calvary Of The Sky. During the Cuban Missle Crisis, he served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon. His last duty station was as the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station at Quantico, Virginia. After his military career he taught mathematics in the public schools in northern Virginia and then retired to Jekyll Island, Georgia to enjoy his family and airplane. Colonel Herring is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Morgan Herring. Also surviving is his son, Mr. George William Herring, of Dunwoody; his two daughters, Mrs. Elisabeth Herring Colquhoun, Sharpsburg and Mrs. Margaret Herring Keogh, of Corvallis, Oregon, and three grandaughters and three grandsons.
