Harkness Butler Obituary

(Retired Educator/Realtor) AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Kindred of Hollywood Hospital, Hollywood, FL. Mr. Harkness Hugh Butler of Crawfordville Drive. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 14, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 623 Crawford Avenue, with Reverend Mark S. Pierson, eulogist. Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens. Mr. Harkness Hugh Butler was a native of Miami, Florida. He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Mr. Butler received his undergraduate degree (Music Education) from Tennessee State University, Nashville, Tennessee. He also studied at South Carolina State University. This education background served as the basic for his 31 year career as a teacher and band director. His teaching career in this area began at Jefferson High School, Bath, South Carolina. After his employment in South Carolina he worked in several schools in Richmond County until his retirement. His last teaching position prior to his retirement was at George P. Butler High School, Augusta, Georgia. After retirement, he completed a course of study and became a licensed realtor. He remained a part of the Meybohm Company until his illness. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Catherine B. Butler; sons, Hugh Christopher (Tammikka) Butler, Willoughby Hills, OH, Reverend Carl A. (Marino) Brown, Murfreesboro, TN and Bruce A. (Patricia) Brown, Lithonia, GA; daughter, Leslie D. Williams, Kennesaw, GA; god daughter, Natine (Bernard) McCauley, Augusta, GA; sister-in-law, Betty B. Chester, Miami, FL; cousins, James Stubbs, Miami, FL and Eugene (Carolyn) Butler, Sanford, FL; ten grandchildren, Carey Mosley, Austin, Alexandria and Brittany Brown, of Columbia, MO, April (Andrew) Shayatovich, Columbia, MO, Mark and Micah Brown, Murfreesboro, TN, Alexandria, Bryan and Koji Williams, Kennesaw, GA; devoted friends, Marshall Pointer, Augusta, GA, Charles Adderly, Hollywood, FL and Leona Palacious, Carol City, FL; and a host of other nieces, nephew, cousins, relatives and friends. Mr. Butler was my band director at Langford Junior High in 1972-74. He was more than just a teacher he impacted all of us in a positive way. He would go the extra mile for us. I will always remember his smile and sweet spirit. My condolences go out to his family.

I was deeply sadden to here the passing of Mr. Butler.

Mr. Butler was instrumental in me returning to college, after retiring from the U.S. Army to pursue a career in education. Mr. Butler was a mentor to me while I performed duties as a realtor.
