Isabelle Goodwin Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Isabelle North Goodwin entered into the church triumphant on October 12, 2008 at her home, Brandon Wilde, after a long and exemplary Christian life. Isabelle, known by many as Aunt Izzie, was born in Augusta on September 30, 1907. She was the daughter of Henry M. North and Mary Belle Walker North. She graduated from Tubman High School and Sweet Briar College. A very active member of the greater Augusta community, she served as the President of the Board of the Mary Warren Foundation, President of the Augusta Junior League, President of the Hill Top Garden Club, member of the Garden Clubs of Georgia, the Augusta Museum and the Richmond County Historical Society. She and her husband were founding members of The Augusta Assembly. Isabelle was a devoted and active member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. In all, she was a remarkably caring woman whose life was spent in the service of others and she will be deeply missed. Isabelle was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Thomas Wright Goodwin; her son, Robert Roy Goodwin, II; and her brother, Henry Martyn North. She is survived by her sons, Thomas W. Goodwin, Jr. (Grace) of Macon, Ga., Dr. H. North Goodwin (Mary), Charles J. Goodwin (Winn); daughter-in-law, Selly Goodwin; and sister-in-law, Willene M. North, all of Augusta. Isabelle has a large family and is survived by ten grandchildren and twenty one great-grandchildren, the last one being born on her 101st birthday. Her grandchildren include: Thomas W. Goodwin, III (Julie) of Como, Italy, Sarah G. Rollins (Thomas) of Orange Park, Fla., Dr. H. North Goodwin, Jr. (Patricia) of Augusta, Tori G. Boardman (Braye) of Augusta, Donna M. Burnside (Thomas) of Augusta, Kristi G. Connell (Scott) of Augusta, Kelly G. Homan (Matt) of Birmingham, Ala., Missy G. Michels (Mark) of Augusta, John M. Goodwin (Kerry) of Augusta, and Robert R. Goodwin, III (Bobbie Jo) of Sylva, N.C. The Goodwin family would like to thank Isabelle's caregivers, Frances Garnett, Eva Mae Gilyard, Brandy Mourico and Helen Houston, whose loving care enriched her life during her last days. The family would also like to express deep gratitude to the Brandon Wilde staff and community for accepting Isabelle as a warm family friend for the past eleven years and to Dr. Charles Shaefer for his professional and compassionate care. Burial will be a private family gathering at the Summerville Cemetery. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 17, 2008 at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Leslie Holmes officiating. The family invites all who attend to a luncheon following the service in the Christian Life Center. Friends are invited to call at the home of Dr. H. North Goodwin, 16 Rockbrook Road, between 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2008. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Reid Memorial Church, 2251 Walton Way, Augusta, Ga. 30904 or to the Mary Warren Foundation, P.O. Box 2822, Augusta, Ga. 30914. I will also remember Mrs. Goodwin as a classic Southern Lady. She was so kind and considerate of others. Her leadership of the Mary Warren will be missed.

Mrs. Goodwin was radiant in spirit and her smile was an encouragement to all who knew her. She attended a Bible Study at Brandon Wilde along with my father. When I would teach, I always was the recipient of God's blessings because of Mrs. Goodwin. My love and blessings,

I remember Mrs. Goodwin well while I worked at Brandon Wilde in the main dining room during 1996-1999 as a waitstaff. She was very sweet and always had a smile on her face. I am very sorry for your loss.

Mrs. Goodwin had a life well lived! I will think of her every time I hear the wonderful Schantz organ played at Reid Memorial. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Goodwin family.
