Julian Willingham Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Julian Bartow Willingham, a life-long resident of Augusta, Georgia, died after an extended illness on March 18, 2010 in hospice at Trinity Hospital. Born on July 9, 1922, he was the son of Julian James Willingham and Mary Ida Stanton. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia (B.S. Physics, 1943, Phi Beta Kappa) and was a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law (magna cum laude, Gridiron Society, 1949). He served four years in the military as an officer (Captain) during World War II, including service in India and the Mediterranean, and was recalled to service in 1951 in the JAG Corps at the Pentagon. For thirty years, he practiced law in Augusta with his father's firm (then Hull, Willingham, Towill & Norman) and in his own practice (Willingham & Houston). In 1977, he was appointed Administrative Law Judge for the Georgia Workers Compensation Board and served in that capacity for ten years. Mr. Willingham was an active supporter of Augusta's cultural, business, religious, political and educational institutions. He served as President of the Augusta Bar Association, the Augusta Symphony, and the Augusta Players. He served on the board of Paine College, the CSRA Blood Assurance Plan, St. John Towers, Young Harris College, and the Salvation Army, and was a long time representative and supporter of the United Nations in the Augusta area. Mr. Willingham served on the Board of Stewards of St. John United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school there for many years. In 2000, he joined his wife in membership at the Church of the Good Shepherd. His broad interests led him to initiate, with friends, opening of The Book Corner at Daniel Village. He spent many years developing his beloved Stufield, a property near Clark Hill, which served as a rustic family retreat. Mr. Willingham is survived by his wife of sixty years, Allen Cutts Willingham, his sons, Julian B. Willingham, Jr. (Sheri) of Melbourne, Florida and Allen S. C. Willingham (Susan) of Atlanta, his daughters, Mary W. Wettrich (Myron) of Atlanta, Pamela W. Harrison (Jeff) of Augusta and Elizabeth W. Willingham (Michael Selig) of Arlington, Virginia, and by nine grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 21st, at 2:00 P.M., at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, Augusta, Georgia. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude for the kind and thoughtful care given him by the aides, nurses and entire staff of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home. Memorials may be made to the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, 1101 15th Street, Augusta, Georgia 30901. Sign the guestbook at AugustaChronicle.com

Dear Willingham buddies, Bartow, Allen, Mary, Pam, and Bet,

This morning I am thinking with gratitude of all the old times together in Augusta when we were carefree and rambunctious children.

Mr. Willingham was the only adult I knew who truly seemed to enjoy playing with the whole lot of us!

Like Susan, I have fond memories of his teaching us games to play, especially in the dark of night...murder and capture the flag being my own personal favorites.

We had it great as kids under the watchful eye of Mrs. Willingham and under the creative spell of Mr. Willingham. In his magical kingdom, we were digging forts, climbing trees, swinging on ropes, watching musicals, laying around with the German sheperd.

I have one very strong memory of his cutting the grass in the front yard while I was twirling and twirling and twirling with the wind.

These early experiences of a bonding with the natural world, of not being afraid to move through the dark, and having a direct relationship with wonder were nurtured by Mr. Willingham and others in our childhood and youth.

Speaking for myself, as it turns out these were not "superficial experiences"; rather, they helped to build up a meaningful reserve of positivity. This reserve has been a kind of life saver over my adult years, as I have had to move through difficult periods of emotional loss and painful recoveries from illness.

My fairy god mother wish for each of you is that you, too, will be able to remember something specific about being in your father's presence... something wonderful ...that will be with you till the end of your days and will help you through this loss and your own recoveries.

Today, I am going to find a bit of time to spin in the grass, as I say a heartfelt thank you to the universe for Mr. Willingham!

With love,

Betsy Blair (Betsy Anderson)

Mrs. Willingham, Bartow, Allen, Mary, Pam and Bet,

I have been thinking of each one of you during this sad time. I don't know what we would have done for recreation had Mr. Willingham not introduced us to charades, water skiing, swinging on the rope in the back yard, capture the flag, kick the can, softball in the front yard, home movies, and eating one kernel of popcorn at a time.

All of the Andersons send their love.

Love,

Susan

Mrs Willingham, Bartow, Allen, Mary, Pam & Bet You will never know the impact that your husband/father had on the lives of the children that grew up in our/your neighborhood. Julian kept us all engaged and created a positive atmosphere where children could be children, yet grow and mature into responsible adults. I owe a sincere dept of gratitude to him for his impact on my life. My sincere condolences. Love, Chuck

What a kind and compassionate man Julian was, and what a wonderful family he leaves behind. He was such a delightful and intelligent person, and he was always so nice to me when I was afraid of Heinrich! Your loss is great, but your memories of him will be immeasurable. Please know I am thinking of all of you at this sad time. Lots of love, Celia

We were so sorry to hear of Julian's passing. Even though there have been several years that we haven't seen him at the Willingham reunion he will be missed, it was a blessing to know him. He is with God now. Our prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. God Bless you all.
