Marianna Daskal Obituary

Marianna Daskal, beloved wife of LTC (Ret.) James A. Daskal, entered into rest on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 16, 2018 at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church in Augusta. Burial will follow on Monday, February 19, 2018 at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, in Columbia, SC.

Mrs. Daskal, born in Kansas City, MO on August 2, 1948, was a native of Bonner Springs, KS. A graduate of Bonner Springs High School, she obtained a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University and began teaching English at West Junior High School in Leavenworth, KS. While teaching at West Junior High she joined fellow teachers on Friday afternoons at happy hour at the Ft. Leavenworth Officers' Club where she met her husband who was stationed there. They were married a year later in a full formal military ceremony at the Ft. Leavenworth Main Post Chapel. She then began teaching soldiers in the Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP) at Ft. Leavenworth, and later at Ft. Campbell, Ft. Shafter and lastly at Ft. Gordon. Also, while at Ft. Leavenworth, she began the English as a Second Language program for the inmates at the disciplinary barracks. Years later, after she and her husband settled in Augusta, GA for assignment at Ft. Gordon, the opportunity presented for her to start a business that dealt with the military uniform and insignia for all ranks. She named it The Total Force, grew the business into another building, building yet another, adding a laundry and dry-cleaning service, and trophies and custom guidons. She became an expert on the military uniform and was consulted by movie sets on the authenticity of the costumes. She loved her soldiers and became a mother figure to many of the young recruits. For many years she provided a full cookie jar and free soda for her soldiers when they came in the store.

Mrs. Daskal prided herself on keeping a beautiful home and spectacular hospitality for others around her. She left her door unlocked for neighbors to pop by, and was spotted sneaking around at Christmas, hanging ornaments on everyone's mailbox because she loved a good surprise. Marianna was an amazing cook and always was willing to offer sage advice. She threw awesome parties and loved to serve her friends and family. And she loved her family and her grandchildren fiercely.

Mrs. Daskal's children are Edward Daskal and his wife, Leah; Lisa Voorhies and her husband, Barry; Susanne Daskal; and Angela Sweeney and her husband, Josh. She was a wonderful Bubbe to her grandkids Kristen Miller (Marty), Kent Voorhies, Sarah Kate Daskal, Emilie Daskal, Nicholas Sweeney, and Abigail Sweeney as well as her great grandchild, David Miller. She also leaves her identical twin sister, Joanna Wilson (Dennis) of Parsons, KS and a brother, Timothy Wind, of Overland Park, KS

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward H. Wind, and her mother, Angela M. (Marino) Wind.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening, February 15, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Ms. Marianna you will be truly missed at bingo. It will be hard to look at your seat and know you won't be sitting there any more. You were the best. Lee

We send our deepest sympathy to the family of Marianna. We were her neighbors during her growing up years and close friends of her parents. May the memories of the person that she was ease the heartache you are feeling. And may she rest in peace.

Marianna - so smart, friendly, and loving. I've so enjoyed being neighbors with the Daskals. I loved playing Rummykubs with her even though she usually won! She was an extraordinary individual - so talented in so many ways. She will be missed by many.
