P. Shuford Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Sunday, October 10, 2010, Mr. P. Stuart Shuford, 80. Mr. Shuford was a South Carolina native, born in the Jocassee Valley to parents William P. Shuford and Beulah Chapman Shuford. He moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1952, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a 1952 graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and a member of the infamous 1949ers football team. He served his country in the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves as a Major. He was a former plumbing contractor and a member of Local 150 in Augusta. He was currently employed with the Richmond County Dept. of Inspections as a Plumbing Inspector. For the last forty years, he was a member of Trinity On-The-Hill United Methodist Church. He died on Sunday, surrounded by his five children who survive him. They are Alice "Lisa" McAuliffe Shuford of Augusta, Ruth Shuford Pirkle (Frank) of Hoschton, Georgia, William Stuart Shuford (Jennifer) also of Augusta, Rosemary Erbelding Shuford, of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Sallie Shuford West (John) of Richmond, Virginia. Three sisters survive him as well, Rilla Shuford Whitmire (Ralph) of Salem, South Carolina, Mozelle Shuford Geisel of Anderson, South Carolina, and Sue Shuford Hasper (Ken) of Wayland, Michigan. He had four grandchildren, John "Jack" R. West, III and Annabel Hodges Stuart West, both of Richmond, Virginia, and Henry Stuart Shuford and Anna Bridget Shuford of Augusta. The memorial service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday October 13, at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity On-The-Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Hatfield and the Rev. John R. West, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at 4:00 P.M. at the Church of McKinney Chapel in Pickens, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions be sent to the American Diabetes Association Memorial and Honors Program, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
