Gladys Jurney Obituary

(nee Akre)

1918-2008

The beloved, devoted wife of the late Robert Jurney went home to meet her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. She resided at Willow Crest Nursing Pavilion in Sandwich, IL. She loved God and was one of His faithful prayer warriors. Gladys was born the third of nine children on December 7, 1918 in Fonda, IA, to Lars and Johanna (Hatteburg) Akre who migrated to the U.S. from Norway.

She was united in marriage to Robert Jurney on July 4, 1940 and was blessed with four children who will miss her dearly. They are Lee W. (Linda) Jurney of Martinez, GA, Patricia (Bob) Taxis of Plano, IL, Roger (Linda) Jurney of Sandwich, IL, and Judy (Ron) Severson of Newark, IL. Gladys' pride and joy were her nine grandchildren, Debra (John) Klossing, Darin (Cherrie) Severson, Chris Stine, Marcy (Tim) Ayers, Doug (Mandy) Taxis, Steve (Melanie) Taxis, Lee W. Clapper, Rhonda (Craig) Brockman and Robert Choate; her 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her two sisters, Grace (Curt) Owenson and Myrtle (Tom) Johnson, both of Story City, IA; her two brothers, John (Bea) Akre of Newark, IL, and Lawrence (Shirley) Akre of Davenport, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert of 50 years; her five brothers, and one sister.

Gladys was employed at Western Electric and CTS Knights before she and Bob opened Jurney's Inn Restaurant in Newark, IL where she became well known for her home cooked meals and bakery goods. Her love for quilting filled any spare minute she had. Between her quilts and Bob's needlework, there are countless pieces that will be cherished forever by their family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 29, 2008 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 1010 W. South Street in Plano, IL.

The Funeral Service will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 30, 2008 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral in Plano, IL, with Pastor Ivan Truman, officiating. Burial will follow in the Millington-Newark Cemetery in Millington, IL.
