John McDougal Obituary

John W. McDougal, 92, of Oswego, IL passed away Friday, October 28, 2016 at Seasons Hospice of Naperville. He was born March 16, 1924 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, the son of the late Claude and Annie Rebecca (Cunningham) McDougal. John was the son of an oil well driller who moved from Oklahoma to southern Illinois to follow the oil boom. In southern Illinois, John made his mark as an outstanding football and basketball player at Salem High School. In 1944, his junior season the basketball team of which he was captain, along with teammate Jim Finks, placed 3rd in the State Basketball Tournament. Due to his age, he was not allowed to finish his senior year, but instead was drafted in WWII to be a member of the US Navy and then later to a Marine medic. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Station and served in Hawaii, Japan, and the Peleliu Islands. After the war, he entered Evansville College (now University of Evansville), where he lettered for 3 years as a halfback on the football team. In 1947 the Evansville football team met the NIU Huskies in the Refrigerator Bowl of which he played in. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Evansville and his Masters in Science from the University of Illinois. He began a 40-year basketball coaching career that spanned 5 decades from Palestine, Ill, to Carmi High, Prospect High, then moving to West Aurora High School in 1965. In his High School Coaching Career, he qualified for the Illinois Elite "500" club and ranks among the state's winningest head coaches with 692 combined victories-556 at the high school level. He then was hired to coach at NIU in 1976 following West Aurora's 2nd place finish in the IHSA state tournament. Under his tutelage, his West Aurora 1973 team also placed 3rd place at State. His teams at NIU won 136 games and he helped guide NIU to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. He is still the winningest head basketball coach in NIU history. After 10 seasons at NIU, he became an assistant at Western Michigan University for two seasons. John then became the Head coach at Rockford Lutheran High School, which placed 4th in the State Tournament in 1997. He retired at that time. He is believed to be the only man to coach in both the IHSA 2A and A state tournament finals as well as compete as a student athlete in the state finals. John was blessed with many wonderful players and assistant coaches throughout the years. John was named to the following High School Hall of Fames- Salem, Carmi, West Aurora, and Rockford Lutheran as well as the colleges of Evansville and NIU. He was also inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was voted to the IHSA's Centennial State Tourney "100 Legends" list. John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sara Clutter, brother Charles, and his beloved wife Betty Anne Meyers. He is survived by his sister Mary Anne Wood, his daughters- Rebecca (David) Hejtmanek of Yorkville, Mary (David) Schroeder of St. Charles, and Nancy (Rob) Prentiss of Batavia. Memories and Condolences
for John McDougal

Not sure what to say?

Little things often define the character of a man. Coach McDougal was my much admired, talented football coach. As such, I have many fine memories of our lives on the gridiron at Carmi Township High School in Carmi, Ill. But my favorite revelation into his character came in History Class. Every test ended with the same question. "Who was the first President of the United States?" The students were curious why. We learned, but not from Coach, that there was a special needs student in our class, and she was always able to answer that one question. Coach included the question on every test so she could always get one answer correct.
Truly, Coach was a man of character and heart.

I just learned of the passing of one of the best teacher, coach, mentor, and friend I have had the pleasure of knowing in my life time. He came to Carmi Township High School in the school year of 1954-1955. I was a freshman. He taught, coached, and mentored me four years that set the stage for what success I have had in life. He was a great friend of the Class of 58. I called him on Friday night October 7 while the Class of 58 was preparing to celebrate our Mini-Reunion and we talked about former athletes he coached that were at the Reunion. Hundreds of students have benefited from his teaching career. May God add his blessings to his family of four wonderful daughters.

Great coach and a great teacher. He used to tease me about my "long" hair when I ran track at CTHS in Carmi. He will be missed.

Coach McDougal was a mentor and friend to many Carmi Township High School students. I was blessed to have known him and played Varsity Letterman Football, Track and Baseball as a student athlete in 1963 and 1964. As a transfer student from Henderson County, KY High School (Coach Mojo Hollowell-1961 & 1962 Big 8 Champions)the beginning of my Junior year; Coach McDougal made me feel welcome. I never thanked him and I regret I did not. May God's richest blessings be bestowed upon all of his family; he is in a better place! "Pro Patria Vigilans" John G. Runion, Sr. P.O. Loved every minute of being a part of the Rockford Lutheran team when Coach Mac was there. His one-liners were hilarious and he was the perfect mix of discipline, humor, and coaching. So many memories from the two short years I had with him at Lutheran and then the times I have run in to him since. A great one!

I never played for him but heard many stories from those who did. He taught me how to drive, which I still think of his lessons sometimes in the car. He was loved by his teams and respected by his opponents. If this man touched your life, you were lucky. He was a true Gentleman. God Bless you Coach.

What can I say that has not been said. How lucky I was to have Mr. McDougal as my Dept. Chair when I was hired to teach at West High.

As a first time teacher and former student of West, I learned so much---I watched how he mentored students and treated them fairly, his kindness, humbleness and that big smile.

He inspired me to go beyond the limits and when I had a situation that was hard for me to deal with, he said "when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

I never forgot that and still live it today. When my husband passed several years ago, I received a card from him.

I know my Jim loved how he coached and I am sure by now, he is in attendance to Mr. McDougal's basketball stories in a heavenly place.

To his family, several I had in class and coached, and taught with--God Bless you and I know you will have so many beautiful memories of you Dad---I sure do.

John Mac,
He was one that comes along in a lifetime
that changes how you live,love,work,play.
and how to express your faith in humankind.
I had the greatest times with him as a
coach and I a player in high school and college. He would ask me each time we met through the years when would my gravy train
come to a end? I would tell him as long as
I keep it on the tracks I;ll be doing fine.
Thanks coach my wife and I love you.

I knew Coach McDougal through his daughter, Becky, as we taught together at Oswego HS in the 70's. Though I attended EAHS and was a Tomcat, Coach McDougal did not hold that against me when I did my student teaching at WAHS and was very polite and always sported a kind smile. His legacy will live on as he impressed so many of us with his gentle manner. May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort in the words and memories that are shared here. God Bless....

He taught me so much that applies to my life even today through the sport of basketball. He was one of those people who comes into your life and makes a major impact. Like so many have said, he was a second father to me. I did not understand it when I was going through it, and later in life Coach inspired me to become a much better mentor/person. He really taught me how to deal with adversity. He was and is my Arnold Palmer.

John was a phenomenal coach and great human being. I greatly admired his approach to coaching and how he dealt with individuals both on and off the court. John was a kind man with a good sense of humor which he occasionally shared with his associates. In my forty-odd years of coaching I have never met a better person than Mac. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Coach McDougal will be remembered and missed. I remember his smile and how sweet he was to me when I could not even speak the language. He allowed me to show my classmates how to play soccer. In 1966-67 when soccer was this weird game played in far away places.

I will remember coach Mac less for his outstanding skills as a coach, but more for the easy manner and humor he used to connect with people. He touched and inspired many lives in a positive manner off the court and obviously, with the many young athletes that had the privilege of playing for him....Lost one of the good guys.... WAHS 70
