Lawrence J. Dodd, 91, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 5th, 2017. He was the founding Owner of L.J. Dodd Construction, Inc. Larry was born on December 11th, 1925 in Wessington Springs, SD and after WWII made his home in Oswego, IL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jacqueline M Dodd (nee Foss) and his son Lawrence J. Dodd Jr. His family moved to Henderson, IA when he was a boy, where they ran a small café. Larry loved playing baseball. Later, Larry moved to Aurora to live with his step brother Boyd Dye, where he went to East Aurora High School. In 1943, he left East Aurora High School to join the war effort with the Navy. Larry served in the US Navy during WWII in North Africa and Palermo, Sicily. He initially spent time in North Africa and eventually became a signalman and a Prison guard on base in Palermo, NOB157. After the War, he moved to Oswego where he met Jackie and started a family, as well as a business with his partner and longtime friend, Roy Deane. They started Dodd & Deane Masonry, which would later become L.J. Dodd Construction. Within the Fox Valley area, there are many businesses, schools and churches that were built by L.J. Dodd construction. Eventually, his son Neal would take over the business. A compassionate, giving man, Larry gave much of his time helping others in the local Oswego community by serving the American Legion Post 675 and the Boy Scouts of America. He served as Post Commander of the American Legion and Scout Master for Troop 63. After Jackie passed away, Larry married Carol Schillinger in 2003. He loved the large blended family. Carol was with him till the end. Larry was always known to have a smile, be in good spirits and joke with everyone. Survivors include two sons, Neal (Julie) of Oswego, IL and Jason of Geneva, IL; six grandsons and 3 granddaughters; 3 great grandchildren; his daughter-in-law Mary Dodd. In addition to his wife and son, he was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Florence Dodd and a multitude of siblings. I always had a Huge respect for Larry. Such a nice, fun person to be around. I hated being picked on as a kid, bud whenever Larry seen me, he would yell "Ray Ray the Dogface Boy". I smiled and laughed everytime he said it. He was also one of my Dads best friends, and long time Member of The American Legion in Oswego.
Although I had not seen Larry for several years, I think about him quite often. You will be missed dearly!

I am sorry to hear of Larry's passing. I have so many fond memories of him from my time working at the American Legion. He and his family were a big part of the American Legion family, he was always smiling and had a mischevious grin. He was always kind to everyone and very giving to those who needed help. My thoughts and prayers for the family.

Dear Carol and family, How saddened I am to know of my dear uncle's passing. His caring and compassion for family and friends will always be his legacy. Even as a very little girl, he held my heart and could light up a room with his smile and humor. We are all better for having had him in our lives. May God grant you grace through these days of grief. Love you all, Ede (Lou) and Pete Larmon

Sorry to hear of his passing. As a little kid Larry Jr. and I played together down by the river. I lived next door to Bill Foss. As a little kid who stuttered so bad I couldn't hardly talk, Larry Sr. would spend the time and talk to me, that means a lot to a kid. As years passed I would run in to Larry Sr. in Oswego and We would chat, some how I would always leave with a smile. Although I'm not around the area He will be missed.

Neal I am so sorry to read about your dad's passing. He was a wonderful man, employer and business customer with Builders. Many times I have spoken to some of your LJ Dodd employees and asked how he was doing. I treasure the time I worked for your dad as well as all the times I talked with him thru the many years. To all your family I hope for the very best and my prayers are with you.
