Growing up ... I had the opportunity to hear many interesting stories about Stric Mile's early years as a young man in Croatia, from my father (Milan's brother).
He told me how Stric Mile, the son of a railway worker, of extremely modest means ... was always very particular about his appearance. The clothing he wore was always properly pressed, his hair was always perfectly combed ... and his shoes, always polished.
In fact, he took so much pride in his appearance that he would regularly have a family member escort him across the dirt road in front of their home in Bizovac ... to the train tracks ... and there he would change into his polished dress shoes and skillfully maneuver his way along one of the tracks (like a tightrope) for 2 kilometers ... all the way to the train station ... to make sure that when he arrived in the "big city" of Osijek ... he did so in meticulous fashion.
Stric Mile was also known for possessing a strong 'moral compass'. An extremely fair man, he had little tolerance for injustice. When something wasn't 'right' ... he didn't sit back and hope that someone else might correct it. He was always the first one to step forward.
This resulted in more than a few fisticuffs. He certainly wasn't a man who went looking for trouble - but it was known - far & wide - that he never backed away from it, either.
Emigrating to America ... and driven to succeed ... Stric Mile worked incredibly hard and long to provide not only for his growing family in DeKalb ... but for his parents, brothers and sisters back in his homeland.
The concept of "family" was ingrained in him and he went far and beyond what anyone could ever have expected to take care of everyone.
Stric Mile was truly the patriarch of our family. It is hard to accept that he won't be there anymore to share a quick story or offer some helpful advice.
I think that his life story is an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know him.

Dear Krpan family:
Please accept my sincere sympathies and know of my sorrow at learning of Milan's passing. I have known Milan and Mary all of my life. I know that you have lived the American Dream, but that it was earned and not simply given to you. That which Milan and family have achieved is the result of hard work, integrity, intense Catholic faith and your commitment to family. Milan worked hard, gained a sterling reputation in the construction business and never whined or complained about the harships. Everything Milan accomplished was the product of his own efforts orchestrated with his beloved family. Milan was not born in the U.S.A., but he was a great American. Requiescat in pacem.

Mr. Krpan was one of the first people we met when we decided to move to Sycamore and he was so warm, thoughtful and patient as he showed us some of his homes and finally, his own home. He was humble, so very interesting with his stories and most of all, sincere. We would see him often in our area, inspecting homes being built - a better builder could not be found! He was up on a roof not long ago, he continued to amaze us with his daily routine. He will be missed!

Dear Krpan Family,
I've had the pleasure of knowing Milan for over 20 years - since the days of Wolohan Lumber. Milan would come in and order entire bundles of wood to be delivered to his job sites. There, one of his employees would hand-pick the best pieces out to be used for building one of Milan's homes. In life, we meet bundles and bundles of people, but only a few stand out as being the best pieces. Milan was certainly one of them. My family extends our deepest sympathy to all of you in this difficult time.

I'm feeling great sadness as I write this. I've known Milan my entire life and have felt he would always some how be "around". I remember the Saturday night card games at Aunt Tillie and Uncle Mike's, and other "family" get together's. He had a great smile and an even greater laugh, a very caring man. He will be missed!

I met Milan almost 30 years ago when I first starting working for Bill Hanna. He would share so many stories with us when he would stop by the office, we loved to hear them. He was the kind of man that we always liked to see come through our front door. He was a gentle man in every way and I will miss him.

I have unfortunately found myself having to write and sign many guest books in the past couple years. Many of which were good friends culminated from different hats I've worn in my life. This is a guest book that I find very difficult to sign and honestly very shocked in having to do so at this time. No one is ever ready for this time in their life although we know it is inevitable.
I, along with all of us in the Milan Krpan family, cannot say enough about the generous out pouring that we are experiencing at this very difficult time in our family. The many kind words, show of affection and many, many stories of my father and your experiences with my father are very welcomed and appreciated.
Milan was a very unique man, the type of man that seems to becoming a rarer find in todays got to go world. Milan rarely missed the opportunity to pay his last respects in the passing of one from his family, a friend or an acquaintance from business or his everyday travels. He valued each and every opportunity that he had in meeting someone new or an old friend.
We've found that our family has had to share this man with many throughout the years but it is at this time that we are very fortunate to be able to see and enjoy how many lives Milan has touched over the years.
A good friend wrote to me shortly after hearing the news of my fathers passing and in his note said that he honestly felt that Milan has been just as important of an icon to the DeKalb/Sycamore communities has Haish, Glidden and Ellwood.... after just several days since Milan has passed, I am going to have to agree, a rare individual Milan truly was and I hope that I can speak for the entire Milan Krpan family here that we all feel extremely fortunate and honored to have him as the father of this family. We will forever cherish his love for us, his friends, his community and the two countries he loved dearly, his homeland and birthplace, Croatia and the country that became his home, United States of America.

Dear friends,
Words cannot express how saddened I was to learn of Mr. Krpan's passing. It was as if I had lost a member of my own family. He never failed to tell me to call him Milan but I had such a great awe and respect for him that I couldn't bring myself to do this. He was and always will be MR. Krpan to me. The name Milan Krpan in Dekalb County is synonymous with master craftsmanship, integrity, dignity, honesty and the ability to care and wish the best for all the people he came in contact with. A man who sealed a business venture with a handshake and you knew that it was as binding as a legal document. After purchasing a home and 2 townhomes that were Krpan built I felt that I was never a customer but rather part of the Krpan family. The many kindnesses that Maria and Mr. Krpan showed not only to me but to others in our community is immeasurable. They both truly have lived their lives in faith and stewardship. Often doing their acts of kindness anonymously without praise or rewards. He was a great man and will not only be missed by his family but by everyone who had the honor of knowing him. When I think of Mr. Krpan I think of a quote I heard long ago-"To know that one life has breathed easier because I have lived....this is to have succeeded." You my dear friend have truly succeeded. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I am thankful to have the Krpans in my life-

Mrs. Krpan, Mary Ann, Ivan, Marty, Milan & Families, Our sincerest sympathy on your loss. Milan was always such a great person to visit with. We have always sincerely felt priviledged that he placed his trust in us. While my son built a home in an adjoining subdivision, he always remarks that his lot is next door to the Krpan subdivision. He knows his house is more valuable simply because it is adjacent to a Krpan development. Our communities have suffered a tremendous loss.

Maria and Family,
Hold onto all those fond memories. We hope that you can find comfort and strength in knowing how respected and admired Milan was by so many. There will definitely be a void in the community.

My prayers are with the Krpan family for peace and comfort in the loss of Milan. DeKalb County was built better because of him. He instilled the "Krpan-built" values into his sons so that legacy will continue to grow. He went about his business in a quiet sort of way but when asked to stand up and be counted he always answered. I've never had more a more insightful cup of McDonald's coffee than those I had with Milan.

We send our sympathies to Mrs Krpan and her family. My wife and I met Mr Krpan one time when we were looking for a home last year. He introduced himself as the father of the builder. He opened the home that was being built and showed us the many features. What struck us about this man was the passion with which he spoke of the construction of the home. We suspected that passion went well beyond building. We will keep the Krpan family in our prayers.

To the Krpan family. My sincere sympathies to all of you. I always enjoyed Milan, from working with him for a week, to seeing him at at the lumber yard. He was a first class, first rate builder that put quality in every thing he did. Proof is reading the real estate ads, "It's a Krpan built home". Milan was the best example I know of in the DeKalb area of someone who lived the 'American Dream'. He combined hard work. skill, passion and down to earth attitudes and values. He was respected amongst local businessmen and had many friends. He was not afraid to speak his mind and enstill his beliefs amongst his many friends and associates. Milan will be missed.
