Gary Van Belk, 79, of Newland, NC, passed away on December 9, 2023 at his residence. He was born in Lancaster, SC on May 5,1944 to the late Dempster H. Belk, Jr. and Thelma Adams Belk.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lacy Michael Belk from San Antonio, Texas.
Gary served in the US Navy for 6 years, 1961-1967. He was stationed at NAS, Lake Hurst, NJ, USS Lake Champlain, and USS Boxer, and was a Vietnam Veteran.
Gary started his own company in 1988, with no back up with no financial aid. Just a charge card and a prayer. He was known as a Maverick and did things his way. He was known to be one of the best at what he did and was very successful at his business Transaxle Inc. He was on call 24/7 most of the time and really enjoyed helping others in the middle of the night if they needed him. Gary would bend over backwards to help get someone back on the road.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Isaacs Belk of 45 years; one son, Jonathan Gary Belk (Kim) of San Francisco, CA.; step sons, Daniel Quick (Cindy) and David Quick, Jr.; half-brother, Mark Belk of Springfield, VA., Dean Belk of Rock Hill, SC.; half-sisters, Bonnie Belk of Westminster, SC. and Susan Belk Humphrey of Mooresville, NC.; step brothers, Lamar Garrett of Westminster, SC; step mother, Ethelin Stencil; grandchildren, Lucas Schmitt Belk and Elizabeth Schmitt Belk; step grandchildren, Kaylee Criscione, Kendall Weiss, Karis Quick.
Services for Gary Belk were held on at noon on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Military honors were provided by the Pat Ray Post of the VFW. The family received friends beginning at 11:00 am Saturday morning at the funeral home.
Interment followed in the Washington County Memory Gardens in Johnson City, TN.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of Amorem Hospice Palliative Care of the High Country and their wonderful neighbors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Amorem Hospice of the High Country Capital Campaign 902 Kirkwood St., NW Lenoir, NC 28645.
