DR. Warren DOERFLER Obituary

Warren Thomas Doerfler was born on January 21, 1926, in Appleton, Wis., and passed away on November 29, 2020, in Lancaster, Calif. His parents were Reno and Alma (Rohloff) Doerfler and for his at-home birth, Dr. Ryan drove his air-cooled Franklin to make the delivery. Warren was baptized and confirmed at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and graduated from Appleton High School. After graduation, Warren began his pre-med studies at Marquette University in Milwaukee and then was accepted into Northwestern Medical School in Chicago to pursue his degree in family medicine and graduated in 1951. Driving Yellow Cab helped pay for his schooling. His professor of surgery interviewed Warren before he began his internship at Indianapolis General and that professor told Warren, "If you're going to be a doctor, you should always dress like a doctor." If you ever saw Dr. Doerfler, you would know he took that advice to heart because he always wore his best shirt and tie to work and could even be seen wearing his tie when he came home from work and started mowing the lawn. By the way, that professor of surgery happened to be Loyal Davis whom Warren said had a daughter that he thought was an actress or something. Well, that daughter was Nancy Reagan, wife of President Ronald Reagan. Warren's statement gave credence to his unassuming character and what kind of a doctor he was. It did not matter who you were, only that you needed his help. During Warren's internship, he met his first wife, Rita (Kieffner), and they married in 1951. Warren was in the navy and was sent to Korea from San Diego as a medic with the marines. Upon his release, he and Rita moved to Bakersfield where Warren began his residency in general surgery, and it was there that they found out about the need for doctors in Lancaster. In 1956, Warren began his solo family medicine practice treating thousands of patients and delivering 2400 babies. He was chief of staff at AV Hospital and a member of various hospital committees. After 56 1/2 years, Dr. Doerfler retired but continued to study medicine every single day. In 1999, Warren married Candace Halverson. They loved being together and always found time for traveling, visiting family and friends, attending medical conferences, and going to Green Bay Packer games. He would have been pleased that the Packers won their game in his honor the day he died.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Rita, sister, Marilyn Oddo, son, David, and other close
family members and friends. He is survived by his wife, Candace, son, Timothy (Beverly), granddaughters, Vanessa and Rachel, his mother-in-law, Arlys Halverson, brothers- and sisters-in-law, Scott and Dawn Halverson and Tom and Heidi Koeritz and nieces and nephews, Grant and Susan Keiser, Ferris and Sherrie Thomas, Barbara Oddo, Jim and Linda Oddo, Mark and Kim Oddo, Lindsey O'Loughlin, Lance and Kristin Halverson, Paul and Hayley Luther, and Mason Koeritz and their families and a special cousin, Sharon Riehle.
A private family service will be held outside at Grace Lutheran Church at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, Dec. 7. To view the service live stream, go to gracelancaster.org, click on "church site" and then there will be stream options. Warren will be buried next to his first wife, Rita, at Lancaster Cemetery.
Warren loved his Lord and attended Grace Lutheran Church for 64 years. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorials and condolences may be sent to Grace Lutheran Church and School at 856 W. Newgrove St., Lancaster, CA 93534. You may also contribute to a charity of your choice in Warren's memory.
Mumaw Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Doerfler was the BEST! He was on call at AV Hospital in 1962 when I broke my arm roller skating. I was 10! He became my family’s doctor for the next 57 years! He delivered two of my three boys! He even attended both of my parents funerals. We will always be so thankful for having known such a wonderful man, doctor and friend! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I always have the fondest memories of Dr. Doerfler. He was a large part of our family’s medical care through 5 generations. When my grandmother and grandfather moved to Palmdale, they went to him... then my mother also, he delivered my sister, he cared for our medical needs as children. He also delivered both my children and provided care for them and finally provided care for my first grandchild as an infant... he was a compassionate and loving soul. (And always had the best staff working with him!) Thank you, Dr. Doerfler for all your hard work and for taking care of my family throughout the years... you will be remembered and loved by many!

Dr. Doerfler was the BEST family doctor. He became our family doctor in 1961 after my grandfather, Dr. William C. Cunningham passed away. Through the years he kept the Reilly Family alive and well. He diagnosed my father's heart disease, his leukemia, and even cut a melanoma out of the back of his leg. My dad lived nine lives because of Dr. Doerfler. He stitched me up a couple of times and I was the recipient of a few shots in the behind from Dr. Doerfler. But what I will always remember most is that he attended both my father and mother's funerals. My deepest condolences go to the the Doerfler Family. Dr. Doerfler was simply the best around. God Bless him.

I am so sorry for your loss! Dr. Doerfler was a VERY special doctor. He saved my mother, Frances Steiginga, many times during her lifetime. She always seemed to get unusual illnesses and Dr. Doerfler always figured out how to help her. He delivered my daughter and was my doctor for many years. I don't think there are or will ever be any doctors to compare to him. He was an awesome doctor and a wonderful, caring man, too. He was amazing and I am so sorry he couldn't live forever to help everyone who needs help! His family should be very proud to have had him in their lives.

When we moved from Wisconsin (from a smaller town very close to Appleton) to Lancaster in the mid-1960s, of course we had Warren as our family doctor... he was very caring and helped my parents through some serious issues (heart attacks, lung cancer, etc.). Plus, my wife's parents had him as their doctor as well! He certainly touched a good deal of people in the AV!

I grew up, across the street from Dr. D, and his family. He was, of course, our 'family Doctor', but also a neighbor and friend. My father literally died in his arms, on his front porch, from a massive heart attack. He was soft spoken and kind hearted. He and my dad. both from the same area of Wisconsin. His wife Rita, was a great lady. I am so happy that he had a full and useful live. A blessing on all his surviving family.

Dr. Doerfler was our neighbor and he and Rita were a large part of my teen years. I babysat for them, learned to play Heart and Soul on their piano, and my out of town bridesmaids stayed in their guest room the night before my wedding in 1970. He was soft-spoken and kind. He tried, in vain, to save my father from his heart attack. He died in their living room. Dr. Doerfler was a true gem of a person and he will be long remembered.

We went to him in 1956 for the first time. He was the best Dr. Ever. He treated four generations of my family. He was a special person, so caring. During the time I knew him, my husband and I cleaned office, some housework and also yard. After I moved from there I never found a Dr. That was like him. Loved him and his family. God bless family.

There will never be a more dedicated Doctor to his patients. I missed him so much when he retired. 30 years with the same Doctor is hard to replace.

Fond, respectful appreciation for Dr. Doerfler. I was one of the 2400 babies Dr. Doerfler delivered. Last time I had the honor of shaking this great man’s hand was when he showed up for our father’s memorial (2019). That meant so much to our family to have his presence there. Loving condolences to the family and all who’s lives were touched and healed by Dr.Doerfler.. or as in my case, their lives started with him.

Uncle Warren was always so kind and thoughtful. His medical knowledge was truly amazing. I will fondly remember his and Candy’s visits. The trip to Northwestern where he studied medicine is etched in my memory. It was a perfect day with great stories and laughter. You are missed by so many Uncle Warren.

I have known Dr Doerfler since a young adult. I knew his first wife, Rita, as a teenager, then worked in his practice as a young adult. I grew to not only respect him but to love him. He not only delivered two of my three children he was the most caring doctor to my entire family. The last time I saw Dr Doerfler and Candace was at the Lancaster Performing Arts at a concert with Art Garfunkel who performed solo. I was sitting next to them which made this experience even better. This was at the most, 3 years ago and I remember being so glad I sat next to them and was able to catch up. Wonderful human, Doctor, husband, father and friend. RIP Dr. Warren Doerfler. Fly with the angels ❤
