Michael Stuart YOUNG

1950 - 2022

Michael Stuart Young was born on April 20, 1950 and passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 6, 2022 at the age of 72. Though he was a man of many personal accomplishments he would often attribute his success to the hard work of those around him.
Michael was raised in the San Fernando Valley where he attended Terra Bella and Sharp Elementary, Pacoima Junior High and San Fernando High School. Michael is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cheryl Ann Young and their four children Nicole Lorraine Hendricks (Nathan), Brian Patrick Sterba (Stephanie), Stuart Cooper Young II (Angela) and Rachel Jo Anne Young (Adam Ross), along with nine natural grandchildren and two adoptive grandchildren. Michael is also survived by his mother JoAnne Jean Young, brother Anthony Herbert Young and sister-in-law I. Castaneda Young. Michael was preceded in death by his father Stuart Cooper Young and sister Merilee Ann Young.
Michael was an accomplished athlete, teacher and coach. As a young man he placed fourth in the National Weightlifting, Amateur Athletic Union's Junior Olympics (1967) and placed second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Wrestling Championship at 190 lbs. in 1970, 1971 and 1972. Michael received his bachelors degree in History from San Fernando Valley College (now CSUN) and his masters degree in English from California State University, Los Angeles. Michael began his teaching career at his alma mater, SFHS, at the age of 21. He would go on to teach and coach at Franklin HS (LA City Championships and CIF Championships), Palmdale HS and Highland HS (Golden League Championships and CIF Championships) while also teaching regular and Advanced Placement English and history. He was chosen twice for the Teacher of the Year for the Antelope Valley Union High School District. Michael was a lifelong athlete, educator and mentor.
Services will be held at Utter McKinley Mortuary (11071 Columbus Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345) at 10:00 am and will proceed to the San Fernando Mission Cemetery (11160 Stranwood Ave., Mission Hills, CA 91345) at 12:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
