Salzman, Albert
born October 24, 1918 and died June 27, 2009. All his life he celebrated his birthday on 11-11. When he was 86 and entered the hospital, he was told his actually birthday was October 24, 1918. His sisters told him that people were dancing and singing in the streets that the war was over - little Albert believed his older sisters (always). Albert is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Esther; son, Harry (Deborah) of Colorado Springs; daughter, Bonnie of Phoenix; many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was the only surviving son and had 6 older sisters. They grew up in Louisville, Ky. Albert had to quit school in the eighth grade to help support the family when his father died. He did this by working in a candy factory. He was a decorated WWII veteran. Al received 5 bronze stars and several medals - he was one of the lucky survivors that landed on Omaha Beach 3 weeks after Patton. After the war he married Judy Desatnik from L.A. and moved to Phoenix in 1950. Al was a roofer for 18 years. When he married Esther in 1963, they decided it was time for him to come in from the sun. A rookie in the business world, he went to work for Crain Chemical Co. out of Dallas. In a few years, with Esther's help, he earned his way up to be one of the top salesmen in the National company. When he retired, Al was the Regional Manager for the Southwest States. Albert was a founder of Temple Shalom in the 50's, which has since dispersed. A current member of Beth El. A large disappointment in the last few years was that he was not well enough to attend Saturday morning services - his faith was truly important to him. Dad will be remembered as a great story teller. He had a straight-forward honest attitude and was not afraid to share his opinion-ever-with anyone! He was modest man, and minute he knew someone was going shopping, he decided he was well enough to go along. He will surely be missed by family and friends. Harry and I give great thanks and love to Esther for taking such good care of Dad for many years through several challenges. As Dad always said "I'd follow that woman to the ends of the earth" - now we will all follow him. Rest in peace, Albert. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, June 30th, 2009 at 10:00 AM in Beth El Cemetery, 2300 W Van Buren St, Phoenix. Contributions are suggested to Beth El Senior Enrichment, 1118 W.
