Alfonso Larriva Obituary

Alfonso Genaro Larriva

Phoenix - Alfonso Genaro Larriva of Phoenix, Arizona passed in peace at the age of 80 on January 22, 2021.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marilyn (Rossini) and his children; Alfonso, Monica (Rick), Kathryn (Tom) and Philip and siblings Lorena Barker (Robert, deceased) and Rene (Diane). Proud Dado to his grandchildren; Greg, Mitch, Will, Freddie and Margo.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Rene and Carmen Larriva and his sister, Eloisa.

He shared colourful stories of growing up in Phoenix. He treasured his memories of attending St. Francis and West High. He won many awards, including The Phoenix Gazette Marble Championship.

He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1964 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Eventually, he took over running the family furniture business, which he managed for over 45 years.

He loved Marilyn without end. Their contrasting traits created a balanced and lasting partnership.

In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, coin and stamp collecting, racquetball, handball, and golf. As an early adaptor of 1980s technology, he often played video games with his children and was also an avid Videographer. His dogs were always his number one companions. His current sidekicks were his rescue dogs, Bounder and Daisy.

Alfonso always had a warm smile and kind word to share with others. He loved a good joke and anytime on the golf course. Large Larriva/Ruiz family gatherings were a source of immense joy. He was a finder of lost souls and had unending kindness for those lucky enough to know him.

We look forward to gathering to remember and celebrate his life later this year once safely permitted.

I just learned of Al´s passing from a mutual friend, R. Marshall Rice. Please accept our condolences. Al, Marshall, Steve Faulkner, and many others and I were classmates in mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona. My wife, Harriet, and I had met at the Phoenix Zoo with Al and his family several years ago. Al´s passing has saddened me greatly, and made me think that we must treasure each day. Again, my condolences.

I always enjoyed the times I spent with Alf. I remember the bag of Swedish Fish he would nibble on in the golf cart and the Sudoku puzzles he would solve while waiting to hit a shot during slow play. Once when my refrigerator was broken and parts couldn’t be found I called him and he had a used one at my house in less than an hour. Yes, “unending kindness” truly describes him. I will miss this kind soul.
