Anthony Lock Obituary

Lock, Anthony "Tony"
March 20, 2009 was a beautiful day for heaven; however, it was tragic day for those of us left behind. Anthony "Tony" Charles Lock born December 15, 1945, died at 8:22 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. Tony is survived by his wife, Peggy J. Lock; two daughters and son-in-laws; Elisabeth and David Marion and Stephanie and Mark Landry; his son Anthony Lock Jr., and father-in-law Vern Cole. Tony will be dearly missed by the young ones who called him Granddad; his grandchildren, Haley, Max, Spencer, Bela and Jack. Tony is also survived by two sisters, Tricia A. Beach and Christine Kinshella; brother-in-law, Dick Kinshella; two brothers, Gregory Lock, and Stephen Lock; and sister-in-law Jan Lock. Tony is also survived by nieces and nephews, Cameron, Maggie, Desiree', Joshua, Samantha, Julie, Heather and Holly and great nieces Emma Rose and Adelaide. There are many people who were touched by Tony's friendship, generosity, intelligent advice, love and laughter. To attempt to capture the depth of how dearly he will be missed would be futile. Tony was a member of the Teamsters Union in different capacities since he was a seventeen year old young man. He met and influenced many people in his professional and personal life. The passing of Tony leaves all who knew him and looked up to him with a great sense of loss and sorrow. All of us know we are better people to have had Tony
touch our lives and ironically enough we all know he wished to only give more. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, 7900 East Main Mesa, Arizona at 10:30 a.m. Reception will follow at the Lock residence. Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary.

We are so very sad to have learned of Tony's passing last March. Tony was Mike's best friend from elementary through high school and was best man at our wedding, but we live in Texas and didn't hear the news until today. Our thoughts are with Peggy and the rest of the family as they learn to live without Tony, who was always one of the finest, gentlest, and most ethical people one could hope to know.

Our love to you, Tony.

We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Tony. We went to SMHS with him and considered him our friend. Tony always had a smile and a positive word for his friends, and all who knew him were his friends. He was truly a gentle giant. Our prayers and deepest sympathy to his family.

This was sent to me by Tony's friend Mike Sander. It will be published on the Trust Fund website sometime soon:

The Pension Trust mourns the loss of its Friend and Champion

March 20, 2009

Today, participants, beneficiaries and retirees of the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust lost a friend and champion with the passing of Chairman Anthony Lock after a lingering illness.

Known to all as “Tony,” Lock served as the Trust's Union Chairman since 1994. During this period, assets more than doubled. The Pension Trust’s strengths were maintained despite the challenges of economic weakness and several major employers closing their doors. Tony demonstrated a deep understanding of investments, plan design and actuarial principles. His leadership was instrumental to the WCTPT’s success and its reputation as the finest Labor-Management Pension Trust in the nation.

Lock began his career in the grocery industry in Phoenix Arizona. He became a union official in 1970 with Teamsters Local 104 and later was elected as their principal officer where he served for several years. His Teamster career included stints as Western Conference Warehouse Director among other roles. In the late 1980s, Lock served as National Warehouse Director for the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, where his stamp on hundreds of national labor agreements is found to this day. Tony is survived by his wife of 40 years, three children and five grandchildren.

Tony was a very special mentor in my early development as a Labor Representative. He bravely and unpopularly hired me as a Business Agent in Local 104 after I had worked for a rival local in the same building. But this was typical of Tony doing what he felt was right rather than politically correct. Sitting beside Tony Lock at the bargaining table was a true labor relations education. As many have said, he specialized in forging very successful agreements for his members and at the same time making the other side feel comfortable. His humor, insightfulness and knowledge base are legendary. Thanks, Tony, for giving us Teamsters in the West a secure pension. Your work lives on. And yes, Tony, it is a great life if you don't weaken. You did not.

"Circle of Love"
I believe God did not create a Love such as this- that we share with our Loved Ones, Family, and Friends...to end here on Earth.
For Gods Love is a covenant to us all- That he gave his only begotten Son,"Jesus Christ our Lord" that whosoever believes in him, Shall not perish...But have everlasting Life...Amen
We shall carry that Love with us-
Until we meet again
When there is no sunset
and no dawning...

Holding you in my Heart...
Love your sister, Christine

Our family shares your loss in the passing of Tony. We first met Tony and Peggy when they moved in next to us and thus began our friendship. I particularly remember Tony's calmness and logic at the "HOA" meetings when things could get a little heated. He was a kind and gentle man; always ready with a word and a smile. We will miss him.

Tony was a giant of a man, both in stature and heart. Our lives are so much richer for having known him. We were always proud to call him our "in-law" . He always treated us with great kindness and always welcomed us into his home.We had many memorable holidays with Tony and Peggy. He will be greatly missed , but always admired for his quiet strenght and compassion. Rest in peace Tony, we will miss you.

Tony and I were classmates at South Mountain High in Phoenix. Tony was one of the brightest, most compassionate people I've ever know. When he came into a group of people there was an immediate calm that followed him because his presence was always felt. I know all of his classmates will sorely miss him...he was a 'special' man that touched us all.

Our family’s thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Locke family. On behalf of generations of the Murrietta family, we feel your loss. Tony was loved by father and son alike. The smiles you gave are only overshadowed by the respect we have for your work and commitment to our Union. We will miss you.

I met Tony through my good friend and coworker Trish(one of Tony's sisters). I have some idea of how special he is to Trish and how special she is to me. Those family connections are special - I really thought Tony was just a sweet guy. I will miss his calls to work...asking for Trish and him telling me that he was doing great (health-wise), even when I knew better. Tony was A GREAT GUY. I will miss Him too!

March 25, 2009

I am so sad to read the news. Tony and I were friends all through High School. We used to always be seated together in classes as our last names began with L. I will always remember Tony as a warm and beautiful person, always thinking of others first. May God grant the family peace knowing Tony is with Him. Susan Lemons (Tempe, AZ)

I moved to Arizona in 1973 when I was 11. I met Tony's sister Christine who lived with him. I was always welcome in thier home and spent many hot days swimming in thier pool! Over the years, my children and I have enjoyed the opportunity to be included in on thier families get togethers. Tony was always smiling and friendly. He will be missed by my children and I.

Tony was Secretary-Treasurer of Local 104 when I became a Teamster in 1982. We missed him greatly when he moved on to chair the Teamster Pension Fund and I am one of the many that enjoy a decent retirement because of Tony. My condolences to the family of this compassionate man that served his fellow man in his life's calling.

I first met Tony (with the funny accent) when he arrived from England to attend Sunland Grade School. He was the tallest guy at school - you could not miss him - nor could you miss the smile he always had for everyone he met. Even as a kid, you could feel his warm, kind-hearted nature. He brought added fun to our Class of '59.

We went on to South Mountain High where he continued to form many friendships with his naturally winning ways. Always a kind word for those around him. One of my fondest memories of Tony was when he would often stop by Sleepy Hollow Grill after school during our Senior year asking me to make him an extra-thick chocolate shake. While there, Tony would chat with my Mom (who owned the Grill at the time) and tell her that I made the best, most thickest, chocolate shakes in town! That always brought laughs and giggles to all of us. When I would see him at school, he would always say . . . "The best in the West!" Of course, I knew he was talking about those chocolate shakes. As in our Class of '63, Tony graduated with distinction and honor . . . just as he carried himself through his entire life. I'm proud to have known Tony and called him friend -- if only in our youth.

When I first went to work for the Western Conference of Teamsters over 21 years ago, I kept hearing about this Tony Lock guy who was supposed to be my new boss. But he was out of the office for several weeks, as usual, putting out Teamster fires across the country. I did notice all the pictures of his beautiful family sitting front and center on his desk and figured that was a good sign. Then I started reading the many thank-you notes in his files, from both the union and the employer side. Wow, I thought, this must be some terrific fellow.

Turns out he was just that--a terrific family man, colleague, respected adversary, boss, friend. Tony, I will miss your jokes, your laugh, the twinkle in your eye, your wickedly quick wit. May you watch over us from above.

I was 10 years old when Tony was born and I used to play with him when visiting the family at their London home. They came back to England for a while when he was about 10 but I got to know him more when he was an adult with a grown up family. He will always be remembered fondly by his extended family here in England an we feel deeply sorry for the great loss you all must be feeling.

I was the little guy on the block, Tony was bigger than most. I looked up to him at first because of his size, soon finding that he had a heart to match that large frame of his. What a great guy. I'm quite sure I became a better person by having him as a friend in my youth. My condolences to all those who knew and loved him. Of course you could not do one without the other.

I have worked with Tony for 30 years. Tony's life long committment to representing working people is the essence of a person absolutly finding his divine calling. His abilities as a negotiator were unique in that he had the knack of being able to know where he needed to go, get there, and usually make everyone happy that he accomplished what he set out to do. He solved many polarized situations that had all the makings of a disaster, in a peaceful manner. A whole generation of us were mentored by Tony, who always shared his ideas with those he was working with. His ability to mix humor with serious discussions is legend among Teamsters, and his many, many "sayings" are used all over the country. Thousands of retired Teamsters have been able to retire in dignity because of Tony's many accomplishments as Chairman of the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust. Every person that has come into contact with Tony on any level is a better person for knowing him. There will never be another person like Tony Lock, truly one of a kind! I am honored to have been his friend, and will honor his memory by working hard doing what he loved, making the lives of working people better. Rest peacefully my friend, you earned it!

There aren't words that can relieve the emotions you must be experiencing. I attended high school with Tony. He was indeed a fun person. If we took my car out cruising, the top had to be taken off to make room for tony. He was not only a big man in stature, but in heart. I wish to each of you that have to endure this enormous loss my best wishes and extend to you my thanks for the man you called dad, granddad, uncle or whatever term. He indeed will be missed, yet he will continue on in the hearts of those he touched. I am more of a person because of Tony. Thanks for having been my friend so many years ago.
