Bradley Hurd Obituary

Hurd, Bradley J.
of Gilbert, AZ passed away at his home surrounded by his family on July 1, 2009. His devoted wife, Denise, his children, Christine Barnes, Bradley Hurd, Jeffrey Hurd, Michael Hurd, Andrew Starkweather and Brian Hurd, two sisters, Sally Mims and Harriet Staiert, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren survive him. His passion for life included his love of aviation that began as a child. In 1944 he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and graduated from the University of Denver. In 1951 he joined Frontier Airlines as a pilot, and retired in 1985. He continued flying for air operations around the world. His interests were as wide ranging as his innate curiosity. When in the U.S. he was a simulator instructor for America West in Phoenix. Mr. Hurd's interests were as wide ranging as the innate curiosity that drove him including sailing around the Virgin Islands, building a Varieze experimental aircraft, serving as a docent at Champlain Air Museum, flying kids through the Young Eagles program. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and just plain terrific guy will be missed by his family and friends. No one who knew him will ever look up to see a plane soaring through the sky and not think of him.

Brad was a fine pilot and an expert at whatever task he might have chosen. One task that sticks in my mind was a ride in his Porche along I-70 east from the Alpa Office to the FAL hanger. We were really moving and I glanced at the speedometer and it read 110 mph....And then he shifted to top gear. I'm sure we'd have gone faster but our exit was approaching rapidly. When we got to the hanger a rear tire was nearly flat. Last time I rode with Brad!

To Denice and the family: Our most sincere condolences. We all know what trying times you've been through and we also hope for happy days ahead. We will all miss his happy disposition and his smiles in the crewroom.

To Brad, slow down and enjoy the scenery on your trip West.

My condolences to everyone. Brad was truly a great guy, and I know you miss him terribly. I have really fond memories of our families getting together when we were growing up in Denver and our Dad's telling great stories of their adventures together (remember the backyard carnival? and putting Jeff in the dryer? and your Dad steadying my broken leg driving from Breckenridge to Frisco during a huge blizzard). I know Brad and my Dad are up there laughing and toasting each other. To two of the greatest pilots ever.... Kim Aposporos- Bob Perry's daughter.

Brad was always smiling and a wonderful friend. He and his wife Denise attended the 2008 Frontier Reunion held in Chandler Desert Breeze Park. It was great to see them and never thought it would be the last. He will be with us in Spirit and will be missed by his family and friends. May he rest in Peace. G. Treptow, Gilbert AZ.

Captain Brad Hurd will live forever in the memories and hearts of all who knew him. He was an extraordinary aviator and a rare kind of friend that will never be replaced or duplicated.

Bradley, God speed on your Westbound flight....you are cleared direct, block altitude surface to the heavens, speed your discretion.

Denise....May God bless and comfort you and the family through these most difficult times.

The likes of Captain Brad Hurd will never pass this way again. It's so difficult to say goodbye to such an extraordinary aviator who was also such a special friend. Bradley, you will never be forgotten by all who knew you. God speed Westbound!

Denise, everyone's thoughts and prayers are with you, Brian and the rest of the family.

Many fond memories of Brad coming through Casper, Williston and Pueblo. He was always freindly and cheerful. A tough lost to those who knew him.

All of us, friends, family & neighbors have been blessed knowing Brad. He was someone very special. Knowing he has Flown West is difficult...

We'll think of him soaring thru smooth air with warm-soft tailwinds and a bright star to steer by on his final earthly flight.
