Crystal Bates Obituary
29, of Chandler, AZ passed away on September 26, 2011 surrounded by her family. Crystal fought a very courageous battle with Leukemia but sadly passed from complications of a transplant. She graduated from Cortez High School in 2000 and was employed by Sun Valley Orthopedics. Crystal remained upbeat throughout her battle; she fought hard and was quite the inspiration to all of us. She is survived by her husband Brian Bates, her mother Brenda Viarengo, the most loving stepfather a daughter could have Victor Viarengo, special brother Jared Gilgren, father figure Jerry Gilgren and was preceded in death by her biological father Brant Hubbard. Crystal also is survived by grandmother Esther Martinez, grandparents Victor and Ann Viarengo, Aunt Tami Cable (Ron), Uncle Raymond Martinez (Lisa), Uncle Chris Martinez, cousins Alexandria and Angelica (Jelly) Cable, Anthony and Nicole Martinez, Christine and Angelica Martinez, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, along with her best friends Shonna and Marissa and her beloved dog Harley (Charlie), her cat Roxy. Services will be held on Saturday, October 1 at 11:00 am at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 7702 N. 35th Ave in Phoenix, AZ. Family and friends will gather following the service at her Aunt Tami's home at 8315 N. 178th Ave in Waddell, AZ. Very special thanks goes out to the doctors and 4th floor nurses at Mayo Hospital in Phoenix, the staff at Sun Valley Orthopedics, her special support team of family and friends and to the C & W Sons Enterprise family. Crystal, we love you and will miss you forever.

You were so little when I met you. I loved to see you play with your Uncle Chris. You were so sweet towards everyone. I have photos of you I wanted to share with your mom. I brought them out of my storage. I lost my favorite one, in the transition but I'll keep the others in a scrap book. I'll always remember you.
I didn't know you were ill, I haven't been in touch with your family in years. I just makes my heart feel so heavy that you are not here. I can only imagine the how much pain your family went through. I wish you eternal peace.

A little “Angel” named Crystal came to earth one day.
She gave us all so much love, and then suddenly she went away.
We’ll never forget the love she brought. Crystal’s bright happy smile and the lessons of courage she taught.

You were always so special to me and your mom always said that we were so much alike. We thought alike but I could never be as strong and brave as you were while you were in the fight for your life. I remember when you came home with me and you said for me to take two of your pills and you would take one! Then when we went for your treatment, you wanted to flick the pills out to the hallway of the hospital! You kept that incredible sense of humor that always made me laugh. I miss you so much already, I keep feeling like we should all be back at Mayo, but you're not there. I'll love you forever and every single time that I go to take a pic of Alex, Jelly and Jared, we will miss you even more cause a huge part of that foursome will be missing. I'm glad that you won't be in that stupid bed at Mayo anymore, I know you hated it, I just wish that you could've walked out of there, cured and ready to live your life. Keep watch over all of us cause you know we'll need it. I love you.

When I first met Crystal, we had an instant connection. She inspired me and humbled me...she always made me smile. I am truly blessed that she allowed me into her life. I am in shock! Im so sorry for all of you. I was so glad I reconnected with her this spring and we went to lunch. She was so grown up and happy. Always a spitfire even in 6th grade! I will never forget her, she had a special place in my heart! You are all in my prayers!

From the first moment I met her, I knew she would find a place in my heart. Crystal was so full of life, she continued to fight when many would have thrown in the towel. I will cherish the memory I have of Crystal. Last December, at Arrowhead Hospital when we gathered with family and friends, to surprise her. There wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. My niece, Shonna, was very fortunate to have Crystal as her best friend. I always enjoyed visiting with her and Brian. She will be missed by all the lives she touched.

My fondest memory of Crystal was when she was very young, I think she was around 3 or 4 but I’m not sure. Her father figure, Jerry, was teaching her how to box. He taught her how to “bob and weave” and how to “keep her arms up” for protection. Well, it turned out she couldn’t do both at the same time. She would put her arms up but would stop moving when she did it. Then when she was reminded to keep moving, she would drop her arms to start hopping around. Her “bob and weave” was sort of a confused haphazard short-motion hopping as if she wondered what the heck she was doing in the first place. It was very cute… But when her daddy reminded her to put her arms up and keep moving she planted one foot down and hopped on the other while trying to keep her arms up. That made it even funnier. But the best part was that the whole time she was putting her “moves” on, her face was lit up with bright eyes and a huge smile like she was having the time of her life!
From what I’ve heard, she lived her whole life like that – like she was having the time of her life. My prayers go out to her immediate family and loved ones. We will miss her.

Crystal has preceded us to Paradise! My condolences and prayers go out to her grieving family and friends. I never knew Crystal in this life but I have been praying for her for a long time and am deeply saddened by her passing.
