Daniel Dworkin Obituary

Dworkin, Daniel Martin
93, of Phoenix, AZ passed away on March 11, 2016. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He received a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from Clark University in Worcester, MA where he grew up and he and his wife Dolly raised their 3 daughters, Judy, Barbara and Ida. Dan was a true Renaissance Man. He started as a butcher in his father's grocery store, owned a chain of supermarkets and discount stores, owned a modern printing press and went on to become a researcher, professor and consultant in water resources for the Agency for International Development in Africa and Asia. He and his wife Dolly travelled the world, had primary residences in Worcester, MA, Indianapolis, IN, Carbondale, IL, Washington D.C. and Phoenix, AZ and made a second home in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Many years after retirement, he was bar mitzvahed at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothea ("Dolly"), daughters Judith (David Pijawka) and Barbara (Alan Place), grandson Ben Pijawka (Janelle) and great grandson Jack Pijawka. He was buried at the Beth El Cemetery on March 13. Rabbi Levi Levertov performed the service. I remember Dan as the most reasonable "tough guy" I have ever know---unforgiving of hate and bigotry, dedicated to fair play and decency, and uncorrupted by success. Just a wonderful, honest, unpretentious, very smart guy.
