Edna Zahnley Obituary

Zahnley, Edna V.
Passed away peacefully, at age 83, on March 18, 2010 in Tempe, AZ. Edna was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother, sister, aunt and wonderful friend. She devoted her love for life to enrich the lives of all that knew her. Her strong faith, Navajo upbringing and studies of the Catholic religion helped bring joy and understanding to many. She is survived by her husband Charles W., of 62 wonderful years, sons Wayne Day (wife Debbie) and Chaz Zahnley. Daughters Kris Moyer (husband David), Stephanie Guyette (husband Chad) and Leah Broten (fiance Gene), 16 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren and sister Francis Balcomb. Edna was born June 1, 1926, to Roland and Virginia Mahan in Chambers, Arizona. Her love for nature and wildlife moved her to live in Alaska for 16 years, moving back to her native Arizona in 2005. Edna's administrative career gave her the opportunity to work for NASA (Goldstone) at the Mars Tracking Station in California. She was awarded the prestige title of MRS. ARIZONA and competed in the MRS. AMERICA contest in 1958. Some of her many talents and interests included, hunting, fishing, archery, painting, sewing, knitting, cooking, decorating and dogs. Words can not express how much she will be missed. Rosary and visitation will be held before the funeral mass on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Winslow, Arizona at 9:30 am. Interment will follow at Desert View Cemetery. Contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley or Alzheimer's Association of Arizona. Messinger and Greer Mortuaries assisted the family.

Grandpa, I just wanted to say that we all love you and know you will be strong. I have a lot of memories of grandma and my favorite was when we would sneak downstairs to get a little snack or drink in the middle of the night. It never failed but she knew who was in the kitchen and would call us by name and tell us to get to bed. She had a gift and it will continue on in our memories. She was very wonderful and as we continue you she will live on in our memories and with our love.

Jeff - My condolences to you and your family. I remember your grandma and if memory serves, she always seemed to have a smile on her face. God Bless you and your family. I believe that Edna is now at peace.

Grandpa I just want you to know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of Eddie, Jessica and I. We all loved Grandma very much and we are praying for God's strength to help you through this difficult time. She is with Father Gabriel and Jesus now and I know that she is truly at peace. May God continue to watch over you and everyone in the Zahnley family as you heal. We love you and miss you more than you know.
