Erna Holland Obituary

Erna L. (Jensen) Holland, Erna was born in Denmark on March 24, 1914. Her family moved from Denmark to South Dakota in 1920. She was an excellent student and it didn't take her long to learn the English language and to excel in school. She went to business school after high school, and then worked as secretary to the Administrator of Veterans Administration in Michigan. She married James Holland in 1955 and they moved to Washington D.C., where they both worked for the Federal Government. Erna had the distinction of typing President Dwight D. Eisenhower's inaugural speech. Erna and Jim were living at the Watergate Apartments at the time of the break-in. After spending many vacations in Sun City West they decided to make their permanent residence here in 1984. Erna passed away peacefully on June 30, 2008. She is survived by her husband James, sister Norma Wright of Surprise, AZ, and brother Harvey Jensen of Ann Arbor, MI. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley for their loving care.-

Erna was always pleasant, appreciative and spoke well of others every time that I recall being around her. Her care for Jim was constant and inspiring. She will be missed.

I missed a lot of school due to illness as a child. My sisters Erna and Norma helped me study at home so I could keep my grades up, and they also helped care for me. For many years Erna and I exchanged phone calls every Saturday....it's a day when I shall miss her the most. Since Erna and I were the youngest in our family we were very close throughout our lives. I'm happy she is at rest, but I sure do miss her. I love you Erna. Your brother Harvey.

Thank you for always sharing your smile. Enjoy your wings. I look forward to seeing you again, but I hope to beat your record. Maybe you can help me accomplish that goal.

Our thoughts go out to all the family during this time. We are so happy we were able to spend time with both Erna and James recently when we visited them in early June. Erna remained bright and cheerful until the end. Our family will miss her.

I remember when you joined our family. Growing up I remember your visits to us with Uncle Jim and Grandma, and our trips to Cooper's Rocks (one of my favorite places). Our last visit was when we brought Daddy to see you. I'm glad we had our talk just on Saturday before your passing. Give my parents my love when you see them. Will miss you!

Love,
Hope & Jim

I enjoyed getting to know Erna over the past year here at Freedom Inn at Sun City West. She had so much care and compassion for others even though she had so many challenges herself. She always had a kind word, a genuine smile, and more patience than I ever knew existed. I will remember her always.

We already miss you Erna. Rest well dear one, knowing that you provided love and excellent care to Jim, especially the past several years while his memory was declining, and you also arranged to continue quality care for those remaining years while you await for him. We love you very much. John and Ione Heffelfinger (cousins)
