Gilbert Trejo Obituary

Trejo, Gilbert Brady "Coach"
"Coach" Gilbert Brady Trejo, a United States World War II Marine Veteran, passed away on February 26, 2017, in Litchfield Park, Arizona. Gilbert married Gloria in 1949 and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. Over the years, their lives were blessed with three children: Debbie (Nick), Mark and Patrick (Maureen), and three grandchildren: Anthony, Nicholas and Patrick Jr. Born in Phoenix, Gilbert graduated from Phoenix Union High School and Arizona State University where he lettered in baseball and basketball. During the early 50's Gilbert played professional baseball and ended his career in the New York Yankee Organization. Gilbert began teaching and coaching during the mid-50's at West High School, Camelback High School, Carl Hayden High School and finally at Maryvale High School where he guided the baseball program to two state championships and 11 league championships. In 2000, The Phoenix Union High School District renamed the Maryvale High School baseball field to Gil Trejo Field. Gilbert entered the Inaugural Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Inaugural Phoenix Union High School District Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. Gilbert enjoyed his vacations in San Diego with family and many friends. He was a simple man who worked all his life. He was firm, dedicated to his beliefs and raised his children to be the same. He touched many lives in so many positive ways. His personality and easy going attitude was what made him so popular with so many people. He will be forever missed and has left behind a great legacy of family, values and work for all to reflect and admire. A small niche-side service will be held at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Phoenix, AZ, on Tuesday March 7th at 1:30PM. In lieu of flowers, direct donations to Sanctuary Hospice LLC who provided excellent care for Gilbert. Arrangements have been made through Regency Mortuary, Sun City, AZ. Coach I have thought about you all the time, you were my saving grace. Looking back at growing up in a troubled household and going to school and seeing you, made my life so much better. I have told my kids and my grandkids of your love for players and your favorite thing was to yell my name and watch me jump! Then you smile and come over and hung me! Love u coach!

Coach, thank you. There were times I was ready to just quit. You had a few words for me at the right times. You had some insight, somehow. More than a coach, you were a teacher in life. I will never forget you. Thanks, Coach. Yeah, the handball games were that competitive! I loved it!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Coach!

My remembrances for the Trejo family:

Coach:

Thank you for the teaching, time and memories at MHS on the ball field. Thank you for your friendship to my father and mother. Thank you for the memories of the afterhours discussions when we worked at the dog track together. Thank you for the many memories at Alhambra HS on the handball courts and then "lunch" at the tavern on 15th ave. Thank you for making such a difference in so many lives. Thank you for being a man to emulate and a man of such character.

To the Trejo family: Coach had an indelible impact on my life at MHS and in later years, working with him at the track and playing handball with him. He and my father were friends and shared a bond as they were two of a kind- strong, confident and the epitome of character. I know that my mother and coach had enjoyable moments over offee together frequently at MHS and were good friends. God bless coach and all of you.
