Gurevitz, Harold "Hitch"
Harold "Hitch" Gurevitz was born December 20, 1930 to Samuel and Ida Gurevitz in Chicago, IL. He was raised in Whiting, IN. Upon his graduation from Whiting High School, he attended Butler University. While at Butler, Harold was a walk on player in the football and track program, subsequently receiving athletic scholarships in both sports. In 1953, after graduating with a BS degree in Pharmacy, he went on to a 66 year career in pharmacy, working as a pharmacist for large retail drug stores and operating his own family drug store in the Chicago land area. Upon moving to Phoenix in 1981, he continued his pharmacy career, working for Revco Drugs in Tempe and a couple large retail drug store, retiring in 2009. In 1953, while in his last year at Butler University, Harold married Eva Altman from St. Louis, MO. Upon settling in Burbank, Illinois (Chicago), they had six children. In 1981, Harold and Eva moved to the Phoenix area, with many of his children following. In 1987, Eva passed away after a brief battle with cancer. In 1990, he married Janet Raiford from Staten Island, NY, settling at the Sunbird Community in Chandler, AZ. Harold touched the lives of many people, not only through his efforts as a pharmacist, but also during his extensive involvement with the Lions Club. Since 1959, he served in countless offices for Lions International, including the position of District Governor (1A Chicago), with his slogan "Find a Need and Fill It." After moving to Arizona, he formed the Tempe Sun Devil Lions Club and was a member up until 2010 when he transferred to the Chandler Sunbird Lions Club. During his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and became quite skilled in oil painting, ceramics, and traveling throughout the U.S. and other countries. Harold was a man of great generosity and compassion for his fellow man. He will be sorely missed and is survived by his wife Janet and children Samuel (Eileen), Lillian (Bill), Marcia (Chuck), Alan (Jane), Bruce (Ellen), step-children Gerald Gordon, Brenda Lee Gordon, Raymond Gordon and Faith B, 11 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren, 3 great step-grandchildren, sisters June Kovalsky and Shirley Smith; nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends. Graveside services were held on Monday, April 7th at Mesa City Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E.
