Hubert Pitre Obituary

Hubert G. Pitre 1932 - 2012 Long time Phoenix area automotive dealer Hubert G. (Bert) Pitre passed away Tuesday morning, July 10th, 2012 at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Born in Bay City, Michigan, Pitre seemingly was born to be in the automobile business, selling the family car at age 14. After he graduated from the General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan, he was a Service Advisor and Used Car Salesman at Garber Buick in Saginaw, Michigan. He saved enough money to eventually open his first dealership, Bert Pitre Chevrolet Cadillac in Greenville, Michigan in 1965. In the early 1970s, General Motors offered Pitre a new Buick franchise in Scottsdale, Arizona. Pitre Buick opened as one of the first dealerships on Scottsdale's Motor Mile in 1973. Pitre's voice was a familiar sound on Phoenix radio stations through the late 1990s with his signature "Hello, this is Bert Pitre" introductions, always ending his radio commercials with a "thank you." Pitre also spoofed popular television commercials of the day to promote his dealerships. From the early 70s through the late 90s, he opened multiple dealerships in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Sun City. His new car franchises included Buick, Pontiac, GMC Truck, Chrysler, Plymouth, Jeep, Eagle, Kia, Subaru and Isuzu. Pitre was also an early franchisee of Hyundai. By the late 1990s, Pitre employed nearly 500 people. He firmly believed that happy employees meant happy customers and was known by his family of employees to be tough but extraordinarily generous. He received numerous awards for sales performance and customer satisfaction at his dealerships and sat on several dealer councils. He sold his dealerships to Florida-based AutoNation in 1998. The Ptire family name remained on his dealerships for several years thereafter, eventually being renamed Power. The Pitre family name is still represented on his son Bob's Buick GMC Truck dealership in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Outside of the car business, Pitre enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer, at one time belonging to five different country clubs and owning ten sets of left-handed clubs. He loved baseball. Originally a Detroit Tigers fan, Pitre was one of the original investors who helped launch the expansion MLB Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Pitre is survived by his wife of 57 years Dorothy (Dody), a daughter, Jan Pitre-Dixon and her husband Dennis of Flagstaff; son Bob Pitre and his wife Mandy of Albuquerque; son Tom Pitre and his wife Libby of Phoenix; and nine grandchildren. A memorial visitation will be held from 6:00pm-8:00pm, with a rosary at 7:00pm, Friday, July 13, 2012 at Messinger Indian School Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., in Scottsdale. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 3801 N. Miller Rd., in Scottsdale. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 85014, or the ALS Foundation (Lou Gehrig's Disease), 4643 E. Thomas Rd. Suite 1, Phoenix, AZ 85018.

Memories and Condolences
for Hubert Pitre

Not sure what to say?

July 29, 2012

Our condolences to you Dody and your family. Just having heard the news of your loss from Sister Mary Lee, it has brought back so many childhood memories as our familys were so close. There were always family gatherings and so many weekends at the cottage on Lake Huron. That was so long ago but we like to remember good times and we certainly had our share of them as kids. Our prayers are with you that God will ease the pain of your loss.

I started working for Pitre Buick in 1994 after leaving a Dealership in Chicago. Bert was a very fair and "down to earth man". The funniest thing I remember was after he built the Import store he came to me with one of the toliet float rods broke in his hand. He said Jerry get me a new one of these I was trying to lower the water level in the toliet tank and it broke. I laughed and said "Bert those are low flow toliets 1.5 gallons. You will be missed by many! Bert was a true blue Car guy!!

My heart goes out to the entire Pitre family during this difficult time. Bert was a kind, generous man who loved his family and friends dearly. It is unfortunate that I am out of town in Michigan for my mothers birthday and therefore unable to be present and pay my respects to a wonderful man. Although I didn't know Bert that well, he was always fun to be around. It's hard to believe that I had just gone to a Diamondback game with him and Dody just last year. I am happy he is at peace now and no longer suffering; it was a difficult year for him that I know. May his family feel his love surrounding them and watching over from heaven. Thank you Bert for always welcoming my parents into your home and heart, you will be missed by all those that knew you.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you: Dody, Jan, Bob and Tommy. We wish we could be there to pay our respects personally but we are in Texas with our daughter and grandson.

I first met BERT in 1977 on my way to start work at Brooks Cadillac. It was just a courtesy interview set up by a friend of mine. My family had just moved to Phoenix from Illinois and I needed to go to work. After about a 20 min talk with BERT he handed me the phone and said to call Brooks and tell them you are not going to work for them, you are going to work for PITRE. The next 19 years with Bert were great. From salesman to Lease Mgr. to Used Car Mgr. to General Sales Mgr. and finally General Mgr. of two of his Chrysler Stores. What a ride and it was fun (ask Bob!).

To sum it up, all that Lynn, Karen and I can say is, "THANK YOU BERT FOR ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES YOU GAVE TO US. WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM YOU HAS HELPED ME IN LIFE AND IS STILL HELPING TODAY."

My condolences to all of the Pitre family. Bert was well known and respected in the Dealer Finance banking community. I worked with Bert when Valley National Bank had an auto finance office in Scottsdale. He was always a gentleman with the utmost integrity

My favorite Bert Pitre stories---

A team of Pitre managers flew to Los Angeles for a business meeting. Upon arrival, we grabbed a Super Shuttle to our meeting. Once we got there, Bert told the driver..."Now remember to pick us up for our return flight. Be here at 4PM!" The driver said..."Yes, someone will be here to pick you up." Bert said..."No, not someone...YOU! You know what we look like, you know where we are, you know where we are going." He then took a $100 bill out of his wallet, tore it in half and gave one half to the driver and said..."You'll get the other half when you pick us up here at 4!"

The other story...Bert took a team of us to San Francisco for some Buick meetings. It was expensive with air fare, hotels and the fees for the meetings and seminars. We attended the first morning meetings and then met in the hotel lobby for lunch. Bert had the newspaper under his arm as he was walking towards and said..."It's a beautiful day. The Giants are playing today at Candlestick. How about we blow off the afternoon meetings and go watch baseball? He then proceeded outside, grabbed a Park Avenue that was reserved for Buick factory people and we all headed out to the ballpark for an afternoon of baseball, hot dogs and beer! He had a glimmer in his eye like a kid skipping school all afternoon!

I pretty much grew up at the Pitre dealership on McDowell Road in the late 70s and through the 80s in the downstairs waiting room doing my homework after school. Growing up in AZ is synonymous with "Pitre" for me... first Pitre Buick when we moved there in the 70s through Pitre Chrysler when my dad opened the Sun City dealership. May God bring your entire family peace through the Holy Spirit and surround you with love.

I worked for Bert at the Buick Store in Scottsdale since the day it opened in 1973 . He gave me and so many others a great place to work and make a living at. Thank you Bert , I will cherish the memories forever .

I worked for Bert when I first moved out to Arizona in 1995. My fondest memory was one hot summer day, Frank Yaconis, Joe Palmisano(my brother), and Bert where standing in the middle of the dealership parking lot. Both Frank and Joe where wearing white shirts and ties, sweating profusely, and there was Burt, cool as a cucumber with a black shirt on.
You were a inspiration to a lot of people and will be missed.
