James J. Holmes Obituary

Raised in Arizona, James Holmes moved north to attend the University of North Dakota flight school. He joined the North Dakota National Guard and volunteered to serve in Iraq. "He volunteered in the old patriotic way and wanted to get over there and help any way he could," said friend Chris Green. Spc. Holmes, 28, of East Grand Forks, Minn., died May 8, five days after a roadside bomb exploded while he was on vehicle patrol. Holmes worked for Valley Petroleum in Grand Forks when he was deployed. Holmes graduated from high school in Peoria, Ariz., in 1994, and earned a bachelor''s degree from Arizona State University in 2000. "He was selfless," said Patty Fusco, a family spokeswoman. "He thought of himself last. That was just his character, just the way he was. He always thought of others first." Survivors include his parents, George and Rhonda Holmes.

James you will never be forgotten. Always in our hearts. So much you have given. Many many thank yous will never cover what you have given. Love you and NEVER forgotten.

David Cisco, First of all thanks for your service. I want to thank you for taking the time to write to us. James was a medic on a ambulance in Phoenix all through his college years which was 7 total years. The pain we still feel is the same as when we were notified. We are very grateful for everyone that served with him or helped him the day of the accident and continue to stay very close to those that served with him. May God bless each and every one of you.

Hello,

I am very sorry for the time it took to finally reach out, I found this page a couple years ago. I was an Army medic in Iraq in 2004. I was not in James' unit; but I was assigned to a Medical QRF (Quick Reaction Force) with an ambulance response for the area where James' convoy was hit. I was there the day that James was injured and along with two other medics in the ambulance, treated James' wounds as we evacuated him to the nearest Army hospital on FOB Warhorse just outside Baqubah.

The only specific thing I want to tell you about James in those moments is how calm and brave he was while we were treating him. To the point where all of us medics kind of looked at each other in amazement that, although he was very severely injured, he was so controlled in his situation, even to the point of assisting us in treating his own injuries. Unfortunately after taking him to Warhorse and returning to our own FOB, we did not get to see him again. We did not know how he had faired until a week or so later when we herd back from Landstuhl Hospital; and then our hearts broke.

I want you to know that I still think about your son. As do the other medics on the team who were there that day.

I have treated multiple injured people in my life, and without taking away from anyone else, I can tell you I had the strong impression from James and his actions in that circumstance that he was a genuinely kind and selfless person. After seeing this page and reading stories about him I can tell that my impression was correct.

Thank you for raising James the way you did.
And for the positive impact he had on all the people around him, and still does.

To the family of Spc. James J. Holmes:

As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

On this Memorial Day weekend it is easy to remeber James, because he was no different in the service of his country than he was at a job or as a friend. He gave the full measure of himself to whatever he did. I remeber cooking out with him one time and he made a fire so big you could not get close enough to roast your food, I told him the problem and said we will have to let the fire die down and he said negative and produced a expandable fork from his truck. It was like 3 feet long and he said this is not the first time this has happened. Where ever you ended up my friend I hope I see you again because anyplace is more fun if your there.

I remember James in high school, especially from our scuba diving trips to San Clemente off San Diego,Ca. I think of two things when I remember James, respect and gratitude. He would never use my first name, he'd just say "Boardman, in the water!". He would always answer my questions with either "Affirmative" or "Negative". It was a joy to know him and I will always be proud to call him my friend.

Such a great message Tim!! I have been thinking about him a lot lately and am so honored I met him!! He taught me a lot about things to better my life. I hope he is visiting with my grandma up in heaven. He loved her like his own. RIP James Holmes!!

I did not know James, but would like to honor his memory by noting the recent 9th anniversary of his passing. James will be remembered for generations to come for recognition of his service and the sacrifice he made for our Country. Hopefully, there will be people to pass on more personal anecdotes on James in future generations also. May his family & friends take some comfort in this.

As the years go by the memory of good friend James does not fade nor does it tarnish. All to many lives are cut short by war leaving each person touched by loss to wonder at what might have been. James was true hero, a great friend, and hopefuly he is making the angels laugh every day just as he made me laugh everytime I was with him

To the family of Spc. James J. Holmes:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Holmes Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Hello to the family & friends of James- The 99th Infantry Battalion Separate Educational Foundation offered me this poem written by one of the 99ers. The 99th was a ski troop battalion of WWII. I remember telling James all about it. My uncle was a 1st Lt. of the Viking Battalion as it was also known, and lost his life in France in 1944. The foundation told me I could change some of the wording and insert Jame's battalion, etc. and I said I wouldn't change a thing. So, from a WWII soldier to a soldier from another time.....,

A Minute of Silence .. By 99er Yngvar Stensby

An annual remembrance, reunion . . .
a time to address
our thoughts to the veterans
of wars' wretchedness.
In a Minute of Silence
we join to express
our tribute to valor
in times of duress.

A Minute of Silence
so nobly revives
companionships treasured
in all our lives.
Intoning that reverence,
the 99th strives
to honor each member
who no longer survives.

A Minute of Silence . . .
a feeling of pride
for the kinship of buddies
who fought at our side.
A time to remember
the first time we tried
to fathom the courage
of others who died.

A Minute of Silence
pronounced and sincere,
releases of emotion . . .
a sigh or a tear,
As off in the distance
a bugle we hear,
sounding “Taps” as a solace,
its notes soft and clear.

A Minute of Silence . . .
a moment of prayer;
a time to reflect
on our Provident care.
A time to be solemn . . .
a wish to prepare
for the Last Great Reunion
all humans will share!

To the family and friends of James,
I would like to tell one funny story to make all of us laugh, because I thought of this when I was driving on Saturday. I was driving on gravel by Stephen (my hometown), and I was in the same area as when James was talking to his dad. His dad asked James where are you and he said I'm not sure out in the boonies somewhere. I just had to laugh, because it was out by the farm that my best friend and her husband lived at before they had kids and moved into town.
I know it was a very tough day and week for all of us, so I wanted to just talk about a happy memory that I will never forget.

I will echo what I have said on other posts at other sites, 6 years does not erease the pain or dull the memory of a true friend. The time has only served as a reminder of how hard it is to have a friend of the quality that James was. The only sollice I take is James's love of flying and the hope that he is high above us all, watching and waiting tell the day we can all see him again. Where ever you are my friend I know you are bringing laughter to those who surround you. You are not here but your love of laughter and life live on in all who knew you.

No one who knew him will ever be able to let May 8th go by as an ordinary day. We miss our friend and we know that we will never meet anyone like him again, he was so "one of a kind" in such a nice way. James was funny and kind with a solid sense of honor and decency. He knew right from wrong. There are very few people in the world who know how to have fun like James did. With his big heart. I wish that I could open the door and find him standing there grinning with a bunch of flowers in his hands. I would make tea for him in the teakettle he gave us that whistles, and just talk to my friend who always made me feel good about life. I know in my heart that we will all be able to see James again someday. When I listened to the audiotape of "The Five People You Meet In Heaven" I became a little less sad knowing that we would find the strength to get through the loss of a friend in order to live the kind of life that would allow us to see him again. Because no one who knew James was ready to say goodbye. So on this May 8th we send our heartfelt greetings to all who visit this site in honor of James.

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 24 May 2009. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain Col. Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled “Answering the Highest Call.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the memorial garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception in the Chapel’s Fellowship Hall.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (612/970-7866) or email ([email protected]) the office and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat 23 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun 24 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

To the Holmes family and friends,

As I started writing this, there was a fly over consisting of 4 F-16 fighters for the opening day of the baseball season. How fitting is that! First, let me send my heartfelt condolences as well as an apology for this coming so late. I stumbled upon this site while thinking those individuals I knew from high school who had also served in the military. I served in the Army for 10 years. It was during my time overseas in Germany that my mother sent me a newspaper clipping telling of James' tragic passing. At the time, I didn't even know James was in the Service, but I lost track of many people after high school. I really wished I had know of his hospitalization in Germany as I was stationed not far from there and would have loved to have visited him. It really surprised me that this had happened to someone I knew. Although we did not "hang out" on a regular basis, I have fond memories of his huge heart and kind smile. I especially enjoyed the time we were able to spend together on the football team at Centennial High School. He really was a lot of fun! The world is a lesser place without him. So, please accept my condolences and know that my prayers are with you.

George, Rhonda, and Randy,
That was a neat idea about releasing the balloons. I sit here and think of the good memories and having the chance to have met such a nice family.

Dear George and Rhonda,
No words can express the feeling today that I feel for you and your family to have given so much for our country. I think about James often. But on special days like Memorial day, etc., it hits home even more. Thank you and with much graditude

To the family of Spc. Holmes,
Please know that just as your loved one will remain in your hearts and minds, his sacrifice and that of your family, will remain with the people he died defending. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for his bravery and selflessness, or the heartache we feel for your loss. God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the parents of James Holmes. I often think about your son and other brave men whom I servered with that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms. I served as his squad leader when he was in the Marine Corps Reserves in the Phoenix area. He was always making me laugh. On one particular night while training in the Arizona desert, we were all tucked away in are sleeping bags on a this cold, cold night. I awoke in the middle of the night and thought a snake had crawled into my sleeping bag and settled in the area of my feet. I was sure I felt the smooth head of this serpent with my bare big toe. And to be sure, I felt it again with my bare big toe thinking he was probably to to cold to do anything anyway. The night was so cold and my determination to stay in the sleeping bag and not leave its semi warmth hold was a struggle. Again, my thinking was I had seen this guy on TV crawling in and out of a sleeping bag full of snakes without any problems so why couldnt me and this one snake share the bag for just one night. Finally my better judgement kicked in and I decided to investigate further so as not to encounter snake venom. As I got out of my sleeping bag, I looked for my flashlight but could not find it. I made the decision to wake your son who was sleeping to my right and ask him for his flashlight. When I did this, your son seemed surprised and without hesitation found me his flashlight. As I carefully unzipped my sleeping bag, we both were ready to destroy this beast which had ruined my sleep and now your sons. As the bottom inside of the sleeping bag was exposed, the light came on to an object that was well to familiar. It was a plastic spoon out of an MRE which was scoop side down. It turns out that when your exhuasted and half asleep the smooth part of the back side of the scoop feels just like a snakes head when you caress it with your big toe. Well your son thought it to be so funny that he made a joke about there being a spoon snake in my sleeping bag. Of course (me being of higher rank and his squad leader at the time) told him to shut up and get back to sleep. I told him not a word of this to no one. Well by lunch the next day most everyone had heard about my spoon snake encounter no thanks to your son. To this day it still makes me laugh when I think of your son and his smile when he would ask me to tell the younger Marines about my encounter with a spoon snake. We were all lucky to have known your son. Take care

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

This is such a hard day, and I don't know why. It isn't anything significant of James. I just started looking at his tyeband site, where you can order bracelets or necklaces to remember him. I know he would've said Sarah don't shed a tear but smile and laugh and remember the good times. But that is so hard to do, James and his family are such neat people. I wear my bracelet and every day someone else at work sees it, and then I get the chance to talk about James. Rhonda, thank you so much for sharing this site with me, and also the awesome pictures. I hadn't seen any pictures of him in Iraq, and I just see how happy he was. He served his country and we should be proud of him. I don't ever take my promise ring or the necklace he gave me for Christmas off. I just feel empty without them. Anyways, I need to do something to make me smile, because that is what James would've wanted.

To Rhonda, George, Randy and of course Rich & Anita

There are no words I can say to take away the pain, or even describe how much James met (and always will) to me.
So I will tell how James and I met.
It was in Emergency Cardiac Care class, Jan of 1995.
James was a Marine, and like James my Father was a Marine, he served for 20 years and then retired at Camp Pendleton, he died from condition caused by his serving in Vietnam,
So in my eyes the Marines took my Father away from me.
Because James was a Marine I didn't want anything to do with him, but no matter how determined I was not to be friends with James, he was even more determined to become friends and then even more.
He constantly picked on me, chased me around with a water gun that he had won in class, and somehow always managed to become my partner in class.
By the end of the semester, James not only won my friendship but my heart.
James was able to help me understand the pride and honor of being in the military especially being a Marine.
I am now able to say I am proud to be military brat.
I am so very proud of both James and my Father.
But unfortunately my worst fears in the world came true, and now my heart is broken.
I have no regret about giving my heart to James, I feel very honored and Blessed to not only have been able to love James but to have been loved by him.
I would rather have a broken heart that's full of love and memoires, then a whole heart that's empty.
I thank James for all that he has given and taught me.
I just hope that I was able to give him the same in return.
I do regret not going up and spending the month of Oct 2003 with him like he asked me to, and I hope he understood I couldn't get away, and that he can forgive me for that.
James and I kept in close touch, e-mailing daily, and typical James caring about others, when I told him how worried and scared I was, his last e-mail on 4/28 was not to worry about him, that he was bored but safe.
I will love him forever and always
All of you will be in my prayers and thoughts.
I have added a picture of James and myself from one of the Marine balls we attended.

With Rhonda's approval I am in the process of making a web page dedicated to James.
it should be done sometime next week, I will post when it's done.

I am a childhood friend of Rhonda's. She lived 4 houses down from me and we were friends all through grade school, junior high and graduated from South High School in Denver. I remember so well all the hours we played jacks on my front porch, sleep overs and giggling about boys. We had another good friend Stephanie. Through some years after high school Rhonda and I were in contact again and she had two adorable little boys, James (around 5) and Randy (around 3). There were so cute and sweet and laughed and played a lot. I was single then and as usual with life I found someone and Rhonda and I lost touch again. But we always kept track of each other through our friend Steph, which we both kept track of. Steph didn't move around like Rhonda and I have.

Rhonda has saddly lost her mother, but mine and Steph's are in a water class together with other mom's of girls we all grew up with. Through the water class grapevine my mother called me about Rhonda's son. I called Steph to tell her, we were both just heart sick for Rhonda.

I got to speak to my friend Rhonda yesterday and talked about this awful loss to her, George and Randy. I have two sons, ages 19 and 17. My oldest has always loved the Navy and was a Sea Cadet, a Cheif Petty Officer in the unit. He is in college now and still plans on joining the Navy when finished to continue his medical studies to be a doctor. Rhonda had a son that joined the Army and I have one going into the military. We understand the hearts of military mothers. How we hate the risks our sons have taken and or going to take. How we love them but have always supported them in their lives of following their hearts. We don't have to like it, but accept it and be there for them as much as possible.

Talking to Rhonda we knew that our friendship is still there and always will be. We will be much better about keeping in touch. I wished I could have hugged her over the phone, but we could cry and laugh together, vent some anger, the hugs came within our voices to each other.

Rhonda, I meant what I told you, call me whenever you want to talk, cry, get angry, and I will be there for you. I'm proud you are still my friend, I'm proud of James and his service. I'm proud for you what a wonderful son and person James was, that he was loved by so many. I read each and everyone of the statements about James in this guest book. I will always remember that little boy I knew and now know, through viewing the pictures, what a handsome man he grew into.

Take heart, because it will live in your heart, that James will always be around and be with you in the love and stories of him. That can NEVER be taken away from you, George or Randy. Take care, my friend, of yourself, George and Randy. Be there for each other.

We all here at the Wolin house send you are prayers. God Bless each of you.
