James Shackelford Obituary

Shackelford, James "Jim" Gordon
89, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on August 21, 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Phoenix on October 2, 1925 and raised in the Ellis-Shackelford House on Central Ave. Jim attended Kenilworth Grade School, Phoenix Union High School, University of Arizona and Arizona State University. He was a loving husband of 58 years to Helen Metzger Shackelford who died in 2007. Jim loved and embraced the adventures life offered. He and Helen traveled all over the world and spent a great deal of time at the Flying M Ranch in Northern Arizona. His career in dental supply sales took him all over the state giving him the opportunity to do what he loved most, connecting with people, telling stories and tinkering to fix just about anything. He played the piano by ear and was an accomplished pilot. He enlisted in the Air Force during WWII and was trained at Thunderbird Field, receiving his check flight from his own father. He received his wings just before the war ended and was fortunate not to see combat. Jim was involved in many organizations including the Sheriff's Air Posse and Silver Eagles, served on the board of the Arizona Historical Society and enjoyed the Polo Club. He is loved and remembered for his gentile, happy spirit and being a good friend to all. His death was preceded by his brother Ellis' in 2013 and he leaves behind sister-in-law Sally Shackelford, nieces and nephews Diana Metzger Kessler, Kathryn Metzger, John Metzger, Sue Shackelford Spahle, and Brian Shackelford along with many great nieces and nephews. A celebration for this life well-lived will be at 6:00pm, Friday, October 2, 2015 (what would have been his 90th Birthday) at the Ellis-Shackelford House, 1242 N. Culver, Phoenix, AZ 85004. Jim's wishes were for contributions to be made to Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, AZ 84014.

Uncle Jim and our granddaughter, Adrienne, at the piano!

Uncle Jim, as we fondly referred to him in his later years, was a friend for more than 30 years and he and Helen were as dear to us as family. After Helen passed in 2007, we spent more time than usual with Jim, trying to look after him, or perhaps it was vice-versa. For the last eight years Jim always put us up for a night or two in Flagstaff as we commuted to and from our farm in Colorado, excepting only trips when our trailers were too big for his driveway, and then he would meet us for lunch. During this time, he became Uncle Jim to a third generation, as he got to know our granddaughter, Adrienne. Jim was one of a kindso relaxed, gentle, fun-loving and positive; a role model, despite the loneliness and sense of loss he revealed only after a couple of glasses of wine. Our memories of Jim will remain in our hearts and minds as a reminder of just how wonderful some people can be. We will miss him. We already do. We believe that he and Helen are re-united and that the first words out of Helen's mouth were something like Jim, what took you so long?.

I'm so glad I got to know Jim these last 8 years. He always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. He will never be forgotten and will always have a place in my heart as the entire Shackelford Family does! Rest in Peace Jim.

We will miss you uncle Jim. I am glad you are at peace and with aunt Gus now. I was just reading over some of my old emails I had saved from you both, they put a smile on my face while at the same time bringing a tear to my eye.

I feel blessed to have known 'Uncle Jim', I will miss listening to his stories, and meeting him at Kachina for lunch or just sitting on his deck watching the birds and golfers go by. We will miss you dear friend.
