Lance Cpl. John T. Byrd

John T. Byrd Obituary

While he was away at war, John Byrd knew he had a cheering section back home. He told his wife that his mother "had half the country praying for me. So I should be OK." Byrd, 23, of Fairview, W.Va., was killed Oct. 30 by a roadside bomb in Anbar province. He was stationed in Hawaii, where he met his wife, Jessica Marie. She is expecting a child in January. Nan Byrd said her son, whom she called Tommy, was a serious, quiet person who "always took people as they came and treated them with respect." When he joined the Marines in 2002, he was "adventurous and gung-ho," his mother said. But his attitude changed after he met his wife and found they would become parents. He hoped to go to college and "start a future for his family," she said. "All he really wanted to do was come home and watch his baby grow," she said.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Byrd Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of John T. Byrd II US Marine Lance Corporal. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

I'm thinking of you today Tommy. Not that it's unusual but it is that time of year again. I can't wait to see you! In heaven, we'll have eternity and this speck of life here on Earth will seem trivial. Until then, it feels like forever 'til I see your face again. I love you with all my heart and miss you so much. This is one of the hardest times of year for us, Tommy. It's bittersweet because you have to be happy for someone that gets to return to our Savior but you're so missed. I feel you in spirit all the time but just a couple words or a simple hug would mean the world. Please stay close to me and continue to comfort and give me strength. I love and miss you always.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend (KIA on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

To all, as I look at the guestbook, it makes me proud to know how much my Nephew Tom, touched your lives with the little time he had on this Earth. My heartfelt thanks goes to all, for your gracious comments and support to his wife and son, his Parents, (my) Sister Nancy, her Husband John, and my Niece Holly. Tom was my first Nephew. When Tom was tired at hanging out, his Grandfather Overton Lee Cantrell (my Dad), had wanted him to join the Army. Tom had talked to me about wanting to join Special Forces, but after seeing what the Marines Corp stood for, he jumped at it. He had seen what a career of public service to our country had done for me, and wanted to do something meaningful with his life. He couldn't have made a better choice, nor made a greater sacrifice. Again, with humble servitude and gracious thanks, my Army family, Jane (Veteran), stepson, SPC Gary Louis Sims Jr Camp Liberty (Iraq)(Active), son Adam, and stepdaughter Barbara, thank you again for your kind thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words. To have known Tommy was to know that he was a hero before he was a Marine. He is deeply missed. It's been too long and my heart still aches. Everytime I hear of another one of our soldiers being killed is maddening and wrenching. One day I will see him again in Heaven and because of that, I no longer fear death. Thank you to everyone and my biggest thanks to Tommy. You were more than my cousin, you were my friend. I love you and miss you terribly.

I can't say that I knew your son, I just happened to see his obituary and I felt this overwhelmig feeling. Today is Veteran's Day, and I sit here and think, if it wasn't for people like your son, I wouldn't have the feedom that I have today. I want to thank you for giving life to such an individual that was so self-less that he served his country to fight for what America stands for. John and Nan. I don't know what to say. It's been three years now since I've moved from Fairview, and four to five since I've talked with Tommy. My prayers go out to you and your family. I have nothing but fond memories of the short times Tommy and I were able to share. I can never express the sympathy I feel, or the pride of being able to know someone like Tommy...someone who made the ultimate sacrifice. You have all done such an awesome job raising your son...I love you all in Christ, and am praying hard for you in this time. Tori says to tell Holly she's praying for her. Love in Christ,
