Joshua David Middents, 17, of Ahwatukee, died Nov. 5, 2004. His engaging and playful personality, endless energy and genuine love for people earned him many loving friends in his short but accomplished life. Josh was a senior at Mountain Pointe High School, a top performer on the varsity swim team, a gifted artist in ceramics and a skillful mechanic. Born Dec. 12, 1986, in Scottsdale, he is survived by his parents David and Diane Middents, brothers Michael (Crystal) and Matthew; sister Danielle Platt (Jared) and grandparents William and Betty Gunther and LaVonne Middents; several uncles and aunts, cousins and one nephew. Josh was a pretty special young man. I took care of him for alot of years. I always looked forward to seeing him when he came to the office, whether for illness or for a sports physical. I never heard a complaint or a harsh word from him. Never. I'll miss his upbeat attitude and demeaner. Pray for Josh and for his wonderful parents, David and Diane.

Josh had the amazing ability to bring a smile to my face. I remember many times when he was a little guy feeling a tug at my pant leg and turning around and see my friend. He would always ask me confidently how I was doing? We would chat and I would usually hear about he and Dan Jones latest adventure.

The Middents are as good as they get, and I am grateful for the memories I have of each of them. Mom & Dave being so nice to us when we were newly married and had just moved to Phoenix. Matt & Mike scouts. Teasing Dan was almost a hobby of mine. I will miss my buddy Josh and it brings me comfort that his memory still brings a smile to my face.

This is a tragic loss to the Ahwatukee and extended family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.

I first met Josh through volleyball, he was on junior varsity that year and it was my year of training (sports med), traveling with the team was always so much fun. Josh was always making me laugh. He would sit next to me on the bench so that I would not be sitting alone. He was such a good guy and he is dearly missed. My prayers go out to his family and friends. Josh you were so kind to me and I will never forget you.

Love, Robin

I first met Josh when I was in 7th Grade at volleyball camp. I didn't know anyone there and he was the first person to talk to me, despite being two years older than me. Ever since then, I have always had a great respect for him. He was nice to everybody no matter what. In every memory I have of him, he is making somebody laugh. He was truly a great friend, and I wish we could all be as loving as Josh was.

I am so sorry on your loss. I have known Josh since the 6th grade, and I have many pictures of him along with some great memories. I wish I could be there to be able to say a real goodbye, but I moved away from Phoenix after my sophmore year at Mountain Pointe. Josh was such an amazing friend, and such a fun person to be with. We had so many good times during swim team. He was good at almost everything he tried. And he always made everyone smile. He will be missed by so many! God bless you, and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I was lucky enough to meet Josh during summer school 2003 at Desert Vista High School. We both had geometry in Mr. Wanta's class and let me say that Josh was the main reason why that class was so much fun. He made things that were boring and turn it into something funny (fity-two-eighty). Even though we weren't that close of friends, we would always say hi to one another in the hallways or in the PE locker room. But now that he is gone there will always be a missing feeling in my heart when I walk into the locker room and I dont see him there with his big smile telling me hi. Where ever you are right now Josh, I would just like to say thank you. We will never forget about you.

Being a friend of Josh, I am deeply saddened by this tragic loss. As we move on with our lives, we will never forget the joys Josh brought us during his time with us. We will remember.

It wasn’t until my senior year that I met a friendly, bubbly, smiley, junior, Josh. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much at lunch, before that year, because of him. He and I quickly became friends that year. He once mentioned that I reminded him of his sister, so from that day on, I called him my little brother and he attacked me with a big hug every time he saw me. Josh was a very personable guy; he could turn anything into a joke or a rhyme. I remember one day passing him in the hall and he put his hand straight into the air and waved by quickly shaking his wrist. It became a ritual for me and my “little brother” to jokingly wave to each other upon passing. He soon created a slogan for our wave that I will never forget, “When you wave to say hi, reach that hand up into the sky.” I pray for all those that new Josh, that they will remember what a great blessing he was to everyone he knew, and especially for his family during this difficult time.

Right now, I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to know Josh. Having class with him was one of the best things I could have asked for in school. He would always make me smile no matter what day it was and would always think of something funny to do when the class was getting dull. I remember that he was the same way when we swam together when we were younger. I feel so lucky to have so many memories of him in my life to where I can think of him and smile my biggest smile. My prayers are with him, his family, and his friends and may his wonderful memories last forever.

Josh was seriously one of the greatest kids I knew. He was always there to hug me and give me a big smile. I can just remember helping him out with scoring at one of the volleyball games and it was a blast. Everywhere Josh was, there was a good time. The deepest blessing for Josh's family. You are in my thoughts!

I was on the swim team with Josh and I didn't really get to talk to him that much. I know that so many people loved him and I am so sad that he is gone. I wish that there was something that I could do to help out the family but all I can do is pray. The times that I did talk to Josh he was always ready to help out. I remember that for Regionals he shaved his head and i thought that he looked so funny. Deepest sympathy for the family.

I first heard of Josh my Sophomore year of High School. Mrs. Platt was my teacher. Ever since that day I always wanted to know who he was because he sounded like he would be an awesome person to talk to. The years of high school past and I saw him in the halls everyday, Always with a smile on his face and friends around him. The school seems so empty with out him, and I miss him deeply.

My family had occassion to be at your church for a baby blessing when an announcement was made that a member of the congregation had lost their son. I grieved for the family and upon hearing your name, realized that you were not strangers to us and that a family we knew had lost their beloved son and brother. My husband David Parnell and I both attended high school with Danielle and knew both her and her wonderful mother. We did not know Josh, but from reading all these entries it looks like we missed out on knowing a wonderful human being who brought light to so many lives! The most beautiful words, full of love and rememberance, were spoken of him last Sunday. Danielle, Diane and family, you are in our thoughts and prayers. May you find peace in your friends and family during these times. Lots of Love, Allison and David Parnell

Diana, Michael, Matthew and Family,

I have been thinking about all the wonderful memories I have of coaching the "Middent's Boys". I find it amazing how some events make you look back and realize just how short life is. I remember the days of trying not to laugh at the crazy things Josh would do or say at the most inappropriate times...or jumping out of the pool to run a few laps around the pool just because... Josh was an incredible young man that could put a smile on the face of anyone.

Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers for your entire family during this tragic time. May the strength of God comfort you all and give you peace.

--Josh, may you be resting in peace now. You will be missed by many, more than you will ever know.
