Karen Keesling Obituary

Keesling, Karen Ruth
Keesling, Karen Ruth, a former Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, died July 4, 2012 in Sun City, Arizona. She was born July 9,1946 in Wichita, Kansas. Karen was a graduate of Arizona State University, receiving a B.A. in math education in 1968 and an M.A. in 1970. While at ASU, she participated in a myriad of mactivities: she played French horn in the marching band and women's varsity golf, was elected Treasurer and then President of Associated Women Students, and was a member of Mortar Board. She also was a colonizing member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. Karen's public service career reflected her lifelong commitment to establishing equal rights for women. She first worked as Associate Dean of Women at the University of Kansas (1971-72). She then moved to Washington, D.C., where she served as executive secretary in the Department of HEW's Advisory Commission on Rights and Responsibilities of Women (1972-75). During the Ford Administration, she was Director of the White House Office of Women (1975-77). After two years as a research analyst in the Civil Rights Division of the Library of Congress, she joined the staff of Sen. Nancy Kassebaum as a legislative aide while attending Georgetown University Law Center, receiving her law degree in 1981. Karen's career with the Air Force during the Reagan Administration included appointments as Director of Equal Employment Opportunity (1981-82); Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manpower Resources and Military Personnel (1982-83); Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Manpower, Reserve Affairs and Installations (1983-87) and for Readiness Support (1987-88); and Assistant Secretary for Manpower and Reserve Affairs (1988-89). Following her Air Force civilian service, Karen joined the United States Department of Labor as Acting Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division. She left government work and relocated to Arizona in 1996 to care for her parents, Ruth Sharp Keesling (died 1997) and Paul W. Keesling (died 2001); and for her aunt Evelyn Sharp (died 2007). A member of the Virginia, Arizona and Florida bar associations, she practiced law until her retirement in 2009. She continued her involvement with the P.E.O. Sisterhood and her church. While her professional passion was for equal rights - she watched from the gallery when the Senate approved the Equal Rights Amendment in 1972 - her avocation was golf. Karen learned the game when ten years old, and at 15 won the first of two Kansas Junior Girls Golf Tournaments. In high school, she was the first girl to earn a letter sweater, which required participation in all sports. She taught the golf class because the gym teacher did not play the game. Other golf achievements followed, including the Kansas Women's Golf Championship (1966) and first place in the Congressional Ladies Tournament at the Andrews course (1985). Her trophies and certificates recorded several "holes in one." Of the many awards she received, the two Karen prized most were the ASU Alumni Achievement Award in 1976, and selection as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Women of America in 1975. The foremost accomplishments for which she will be remembered, though, are her love and care for family, and her dedication and concern for friends. A Service of Remembrance and Celebration of Life for Karen R. Keesling will be conducted on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church, 16000 N. Del Webb Blvd., Sun City, Arizona 85351. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church.

No matter how much time goes by, I will never forget Karen--a true friend.

I was stunned to learn of Karen's Graduation from this Earth Walk! She was the one who taught me, when we were at ASU, about the Equal Rights Amendment. Me, an avid ERA supporter in Utah -- oh, the price. Reading her Obit I am stunned at how our lives have been so similar over the decades. Bless her for all of us she has positively influenced directly and indirectly. Now she will influence us, from the other side, to get the ERA passed. OK! -Jan L. Tyler, SLC, UT

I was saddened and shocked to hear of Karen's passing. Our mutual friend Virginia Allan suggested Karen to me as the executive director of the committee at HEW that I was to chair--on Women's Rights and responsibilities. We worked on Title 9, the Equal Rights Amendment, getting Susan B. Anthony's statue at the White House and many other items. She was great--intelligent, personable, sense of humor and always working for the betterment of women and our country. She was so active in BPW/USA--seving as Virginia State President when I was National President. She was a true leader--whether it was for women, mixed group or the military. She always made the rest of us look good. The only time I may have been embarrassed is when we went out to hit some golf balls--she hit, I missed! When we first me, she was a meat and potatoes person but my Mom got her out of that and broadened herlove of different foods. Karen will be missed by the many people she knew and the lives she touched.

My old roomie at the Honor Dorm at ASU and fellow ""Who's Who In American Colleges and Universities". Lots of memories of her prime Mustang and later of dinners in DC and Sun City with my husband, Jim and Karen talking golf and politics.

I worked with Karen in the Labor Department on an international child labor study in the 90's. Karen led the Wage and Hour Division at that time. She led with dignity and a quiet reserve. She was committed, kind, and very capable. May she find peace in the loving arms of God.

I met Karen in 1983 through the Virginia Federation of Business and Professional Women. It was my privilege to serve on the Virginia BPW Executive Committee with her. I also remember spending a weekend with Karen when I was looking for housing to move to the Falls Church area. We worked on the proposal for a grant to fund the Virginia Women's Hall of Fame and the Virginia Women's Historic Trail that weekend (she was very effective at delegating to get work done!).

Our paths were brought back together when both our parents retired in Sun City, Arizona. When Karen moved there to take care of her parents we were able to get together occasionally for a golf game (she tolerated my bad play very well and I was in awe of hers) or a meal out.

The small world syndrome is proven once again - I am living in Karen's home town of Wichita. She talked about Tex Consolver teaching her to golf at MacDonald Golf Course which was near her family home.

Karen was passionate about her family, equal rights for women, and golf. And she was very effective at taking care of all of them. It was difficult for Karen to jump out of the fast lane of Washington, D.C., to the much slower care giver role in Arizona. She did an amazing job. I pray that she has been reunited with her family and is resting in peace.

I knew Karen during her high school years at SE High School in Wichita. We were in many of the same classes, and shared our fun in athletics. In fact, I was the 2nd letterwoman ('k' comes before 'n'!). We met up again at ASU for a brief time. If I remember correctly, in 1964, long before Title IX, she received a scholarship to ASU based on both her golf and math skills. She had an amazing life. I am sorry it ended so soon.
