Karl Franz Nehammer

Scottsdale - Karl Franz Nehammer, 81 of Scottsdale, passed away peacefully at home on November 9, 2018 after a long battle with Shy Drager Syndrome and Dementia. A full military honors funeral will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona December 7, 2018.

Karl was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of Aage and Wanda Nehammer. He grew up in Spokane, Washington, graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, then attended the University of Washington and graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Industrial Arts and Management,

Upon graduation Karl began his active service military career in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and is a graduate of The Armor School, Airborne School, and Armed Forces Staff College.

In June 1962, while stationed in Germany, Karl married Jenna' Skirving Nehammer. As the daughter of a career Army officer, Jenna' was familiar with the military family lifestyle and their great love story began in Nurnberg, Germany that year!

Karl served two tours of duty in Vietnam from April 1966 to April 1967 and January to December 1970, receiving numerous decorations and awards for his service, most notably the Bronze Star Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, and a Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters

Throughout his military career Karl and his family were stationed in Schwabach, Germany, Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Ft. Hood Texas, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Norfolk, Virginia, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.

In 1986, Colonel Nehammer retired after a 26 year career in the US Army from his last duty station at Ft Huachuca, Arizona as the Garrison Commander, Ft Huachuca and the Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Information Systems Command.

Retiring in the Scottsdale area with his wife Jenna', Karl enjoyed his family and continued his many interests including his art work, pottery, woodworking, stained glass, cooking and their many rescued pets.

Karl was widowed in October 2017 after 55 years of marriage to Jenna'. He is survived by his daughter Kristine Louisa Nehammer, son Karl Franz Nehammer, Jr and granddaughter Kiley Shea Nehammer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley and/or the Arizona Humane Society.
