I was privileged to know Larry Boyd, who served as the chairman of my doctoral committee. His integrity, his professionalism, and his kindness were gifts I shall always treasure. His approach was to discern who I was and what I wanted to do, and then to make every effort to be helpful to me by lending all the resources at his command. In the final analysis, that included becoming one of the most valued friends I have ever had. Even though we have had little or no contact in the intervening years, he has never been far from my thoughts and my deepest gratitude for his life.
