Lyman Haakstad Obituary

Haakstad, Lyman
57, of Surprise, AZ passed away on Sep. 28, 2008, surrounded by his family. Lyman was born in Sexsmith, Alberta. He earned a full hockey scholarship to the Univ. of Minnesota Duluth and played all four years. In college he met his wife, Marge, and they married in 1972. After UMD, Lyman opened and owned two sporting goods stores in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He moved with his wife and two kids to the US in 1981, and started his own successful insurance agency. At the age of 47 he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Lyman "retired" in Surprise but continued to work as a handyman at five local children shelters, even while in chemotherapy. He passed away after ten years of fighting cancer. His family and friends will forever cherish his love for life and the determination he always demonstrated. He was preceded in death by his parents Simon and Christine and is survived by wife Marge, daughter Deborah Cox (Brian), son Gordie, sister Gail Sherman (Jim), brothers Don (Pat), Joe (Betti), and Carmen (Gail), and numerous other family members and friends. Services will be held Oct. 4, 2008, 11:00 AM with a reception following. Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel, Sun City West, AZ

Haak.....you were my best friend in college....You met and married a great woman who loved you from the beginning .....I remember driving to the wedding from Duluth and the driving back ....you were and are always an inspiration ....while we have not been in contact for a few years.....not many days went by that I didn`t think about you and how your struggle was going....you`ve always been a winner and we had a great run in college especially our Senior year but even the first year when you lived with the Cosa Nostra....
Farewell my friend ....Marge and your children are always welcome at our home .....Merv
