I met Manuel when he came to Arizona State College at Flagstaff during the 1954-1955 football season.
He was a transfer student from Phoenix College. On campus Manuel was well know as the 'Gentle Giant.' He was very shy and quiet, until he got to know you!
Manuel was one of the greatest and best lineman to every play @ Northern Arizona University. Unlike the football players of today, He played both offense and defense.
I really got to know Manuel, through the Miami , AZ connection, Fito Trujillo and Lupe Acevado. They both were outstanding basketball players.
They convinced the President, Dr. Lacey Eastburn to allow them to live in the Apartments on the first floor of Taylor Hall. The rest of the student body lived in dorm rooms.
Every Sunday morning, I would bang on their apt. door and wake them up, in time to get to Sunday Mass.
One spring Sunday morning in their Senior year, I woke Manuel, and told him that the left side of his new (yellow) Ford Fairlane was damaged from bumper to bumper.
This was one of the few times, I ever knew him to get irritated, at me, because he thought I was joking, and it was too early in the morning for a practical joke.
I finally got him to go outside Taylor Hall where the car was parked.
When he saw the damage, Manuel walked around the car several times, not saying a word.
The night before, he had given the car keys to Lupe Acevado.
Lupe got dressed and went out to look at the damaged car. He shook his head and told Manuel, that he didn't remember a thing from last night!
I'll never forget Manuel's next reactions. He put his big arms around Lupe, and gave him a Hug. Mauel told him that everything would be OK!
To this day, no one ever knew how the car got damaged!
Years later, I would always stop and visit with Manuel at "Manuels Place" in Peoria. As I recall, he had a small weight lifting gym in the back of the bar.

Manuel, Sr. never missed a home football game at Arizona State College.
He loved and enjoyed, watching his Son play college football!

I treasure both their friendship to this day!
Because of this friendship, I am a better person.
All of Manuel's close friends, had an ulterior motive and were happy to see Manuel, Sr. on the ASC campus.
ASC football games were played in the afternoon. It was a ritual after the game ,for his father to takes us all the local steakhouse, for the best meal, we ate all week!
You would have to had experienced eating in a College cafeteria to understand, how , We all looked forward to every home football game.

Rest in Peace, my Friend.
May God and His Holy Angels watch over You!

When I think back on the times I was able to spend with you, I am glad and I am happy because I was blessed to get to have you in my life. When I look back on these days, I'll look and see his face and he will be right there for me. I will always remember the strength he gave me. I owe so much to him. Everywhere I am there he'll be right beside me and when I lay down at night I will always look up to him..a moment in our arms, forever in our hearts.
